Abstract

213,035. Humphrey, F. J., and Humphrey, G. A. Jan. 10, 1923. Wire and other cores, covering by winding. - A flexible core such as a wire core, which may comprise insulated conductors or a rubber tube, is covered with a flexible covering of metal or other strip material, the covering being applied loosely in overlapping interengaged covolutions and thereafter compressed into close engagement with the core. The strip material 36 is drawn between adjustable rollers 29, for imparting to it the desired profile whereby adjacent convolutions will subsequently interlock with one another, by a drum 30, and thereafter is wound on to a rotating hollow mandrel 14, being pressed on to it by pressing means 37. The core 35 drawn from bobbins in a rotating frame 19 passes through the mandrel 14 and on emerging receives the covering in a loose condition, the covering slipping off the tapered end 16 of the mandrel. The loosely covered core then passes through a conical die 25, which reduces the diameter of the covering and compresses it on to the core. The covered core is then wound on to a drum 21 carried by a rotatable frame 22. The mandrel 14 has a diametrical. slot 18, through which the core may be viewed even when the mandrel is rotating.
