212,451. James, R. W., (Remington Typewriter Co.). May 8, 1923. Portable machines; line-spacing mechanism; locking-devices; paper carriages and supports; carriage-releasing arrangements.-In a typewriter or like machine, the line-spacing lever is mounted on a spindle which can be moved longitudinally to the platen, to compact the machine; devices may be provided for releasing the carriage, and setting a carriage centre-lock when the spindle is moved to compact the machine; the platen may be provided at the opposite end to the line-spacing mechanism, with a platen-knob mounted on a spindle which can be moved longitudinally to compact the machine, and this spindle as well as the spindle referred to above may be readily detachable to permit detachment of the platen. A'spindle 15, Figs. 1 and 5, carrying the line-spacing lever 23, is mounted in the platen-head 16, and a bush 13 secured to the end plate 11 of the carriage 10. A ratchet-wheel 21 on the platen co-operates with a line-spacing pawl 32 carrie'd by a lever 29 having a projection 28 in the path of an arm 27 on a collar 25 which is formed with a feather 26 engaging a groove 24 in the spindle. The linespacing pawl may co-operate for variable spacing with the device described in Specification 160,300. The spindle can be moved inward to compact the machine before applying the cover a. When the spindle is moved outward, the movement is limited by engagement of a stop 44 with the feather 26, the stop being formed on a strip 41, arranged in the groove 24 and having an eye 42 secured by a screw 43 to the spindle; the screw may be employed also for securing the lever 23. The spindle is retained in the outward position by means of a catch 45, secured in a groove 46 in the spindle and having a lug 48 adapted to spring into a slot 49 in the bush 13. The catch can be released by rocking a lever 50 having a fingerpiece 65 and a part 51 for engaging the lug 48. The lever 50 has an arm 54 for depressing a carriage centre-lock consisting of a spring 55 secured to the carriage and having a stop 57 co-operating with a stop 61 on a spring 59 secured to the carriage-bed 2. The stop 61 is formed with a. notch 63 and inclines 62. The finger-pieces 65 of the Lever 50 engages the carriage-releasing lever 66, this lever being secured to rocking arms carrying the feed-rack 67. On rocking forward the lever 50, the catch 45 is released to permit inward movement of the spindle 15, the carriage is released, and the stop 57 is depressed and, on centring the carriage, engages the stop 61. The lever 50 is retained in forward position by engagement of a slot 53 therein with a pin 52 on the lever 23, the slot being concentric to the spindle and permitting operation of the lever 23 tudinally to the platen, to compact the machine; lever 50 engages the carriage-releasing lever 66, when the spindle is in inward position. If the lever 50 is allowed to return before the spindle is moved to the inward position the lever obstructs the pin, and the spindle cannot be moved further inward until the lever is again moved forward. The platen-knob 74, Fig. 6, is secured to a spindle 73 which can be moved longitudinally and is formed with a groove 73a engaging the platen-head 70. The spindle is retained in the inward or outward position by engagement of a catch 83 with a groove 84 or 85 in the spindle. The catch consists of a bent wire secured to a bush 80 on the end plate 12 of the carriage, a part 86 of the wire passing through a slot 79 in the bush, and engaging the groove 84 or 85. On releasing the catch 86 and the screw 43, the spindles 73, 15 can be withdrawn to permit detachment of the platen.
