Abstract

15,773. Fell, J. C., [Smith Premier Typewriter Co.]. July 6. Sheet-guiding arrangements; paper-supports.-Relates to paper-finger devices that are specially useful for manifolding work in enabling erasures to be readily made on the separate sheets. Extensions on the end bars 7 of the platen carrier carry screws 21 on which are pivoted arms 22 connected Ly a rod 26. An arm 27 secured to the left-hand bar 6 of the carriage truck is bent to provide a stop 29, which lies normally in the path of the arm 22 and prevents it from dropping accidentally. A spring locking-latch 30 pivoted at 31 engages a pin 33 on the left arm 22 ; this pin 33 is in rear of the screws 21 so that if the platen be tilted upwards on the pivots 13 by means of a finger-piece 14 so as to bring the arm 22 out of the path of the stop 29, and the rod 26 be then pulled forward, the pin 33 will rise slightly and depress the latch 30, thereby disengaging the swinging frame 22,26 and allowing it to be brought to the position shown in Fig. 5. The frame is arrested by a notch 35 in the arm 22 engaging the stop 29, and acts as a counterweight to hold the platen in its tilted position. The movement of the latch 30 when released is limited by a tail-piece 30<a>, so that when the frame is restored to its normal position, the pin 33 re-seats itself in the latch. The rod 26 supports one or more paper-fingers, two main fingers 43 for cooperating with the paper margins, and a smaller central finger 45 being described. Each finger 43 is spring-connected with, and rotatable on, a laterally adjustable sleeve, which is provided with an internal feather engaging a groove in the rod 26. The amount of rotation is limited by a tooth on one of the ears 39 of the finger engaging the feather groove of the sleeve. The fingers may thus be moved away slightly from the platen when the parts are as shown in Fig. 4, but normally they press the paper-plate 19 against the paper. When the frame is swung downwards, the paper-plate 19 moves away from the platen and the portions of the sheets a, b, c above the apron 16 may be moved to allow erasures in the printing line of either of the sheets a, c to be made. Specification 15,772/09 is referred to.
