Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom cit-may concern:
Be it "known that T, ARTHUR W. SMITH, citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Manhattan, city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Writing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to differential or denominational side gage or stop mechanism and its main object is to provide griproved mechanism of the character speci- Specifically the object of my present invention is to improve the denominational side gage mechanism which forms in part the subject-matter of my prior application, Serial-No. 19,871, filed April 8, 1915.
To the above and other ends my invention consists in the'featurcs of construction, combinations of devices and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings wherein the invention is illustrated as applied to a carriage of the No. 11 Remington frontstrike typewriting machine,

Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 the platen carriage or carrier comprises front and rear bars 1 and 2 and connecting end bars 8 and 4, said carriage supporting a rotary platen 5. Brackets 6 rigid as usual with the front bar provide bearings for the pivot rod 7 of a pressure bail which further comprises parallel arms 8 supporting a rod on shaft 9 extending parallel with the platen at its front upper side and carrying pressure rolls 10. Mounted on the pressure bail is a second rod or shaft 11, said shaft being provided at its ends with reduced portions or pintles 12 which bear in the arms 8, the second rod 11 belng parallel with the rod 9. The righthand arm 8 has connected to it a draw spring 13 which is anchored to the right-hand bracket 6, the pressure of the rolls 10 on the platen 5 being in part received from said spr ng and in part from a Second draw spr ng 14 which is at one end connected to a pm 15 on the rod, said spring extending Patented A r. a, for t.
forward under the left-hand arm 8 and bea ing anchored to the left-hand bracket 6. Said spring has several functions as will hereinafter appear.
The rod or shaft 11 provides a support for a side gage, guide or stop contrivance 16 which is adjustable as a whole along said rod 11 and lengthwise of the platen. Said contrivance may be said generally to comprise a support orcarrier, a side gage or stop proper mounted on said support and means controlled by a finger piece or key for progressively moving said side gage proper step-by-step lengthwise of the platen independently of said-support and without disturbing the location of said contrivance as a whole. Said support or carrier in the present instance is in the form of a rectan Said device numbered as a whole as 20 is preferably formed of sheet metal and comprises a disk portion 21, a trough-like portion 22'bent rearward and upward at the lower side of the disk portion 21 and adapted partly to embrace the slide 17. A side gage, guide or stop proper 23 is bent rearward at right angles from the right side of the disk portion 21. It is triangular in shape and is formed at its rear with a sort of hook 24 which is adapted to fit over the top of the rod 9 and is also provided with a round hole indicated at 25 to afford a passage for the rod 11. An angular spring detent 26 is fixed by a screw 27 to the inner or left-hand face of the part 23 and extends along over the top of the rack 19, its free end being V-shaped as indicated-at 28 to fit in the space between.

The spring detent 26 is self-acting and is in effect an automatically operating holding device. There are sixdnterdental spaces in 31. The gear segment is arranged at the rear face of the disk 21 on which it is supported, said disk being provided with a bearing opening 32 which receives a hub 33 of a bearing member or circular cap 34 arranged at the front of the part 21. The hub 33 is threaded to receive the shank of a headed screw 35 which secures the cap 34 in place, the head of said screw preventing dis placement of the gear segment 29. This gear segment cooperates with the forward portion of-the rack 19 between the spring detent 26 and the part 21, the detent being narrower than the full width of the rack 19. Said detent has the additional function of assisting to hold the part 22 up in proper relationship with the slide, support or carrier 17. Confined between the front face of the part 21 and the cap 3 1 is a circular scale plate or indicating device 36 protected by a transparent fac ing 37 of celluloid or the like. .The scale plate or circular scale may be provided with two sets of indicating marks as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 and is adjustable to bring either set of indicating marks into working position, that is, in position to cooperate with the handle-30 which acts as a pointer or-indicator. The scale shown in" working position in the, drawing is intended for use where numbers are to be punctuated by commas and runs from units (U) to ten thousands (TT), while the lower scale which is out of use omits punctuation marks and runs to hundreds ofthousands (YHT).
A pin 38 extending through the part 21' cooperates at its rear with the segment 29 and handle 30 to act as a stop, while at its front side said pin anchors the scale plate 36, passing through one of two openings 39 and 40 in said scale plate. When the hole 39 is engaged by the pin 38 the scale or set of indicating marks employing punctuation is used. In order to make use of the under scale it .is necessary to loosen the screw and remove the cap so that the scale plate may be disengaged from the pin 38 and turned and adjusted to bring the hole 40 into engagement therewith.

The present invention may be employed in writing work forms of the sort illustrated and after the manner ex lained at length in my prior application aibresaid; that is, it may be used to facilitate the writing in figures of the amounts on checks, beginning close to the-"dollar sign in each instance whatever the amount, while these amounts are reproduced in a column on an underlying record sheet in proper denominational positions by the aid of the usual tabulating mechanism. Of course, other uses of the present invention will suggest themselves to those skilled in the art, but the work specified may be taken as an illustration. The record sheet (not shown) is introduced from the rear side of the machine and passed around the platen and up under the rolls 10. The bill sheet or check, indicated at P by dotted lines, is front-fed or introduced at the front side of the laten over the rod 11 and with its left-hand edge in contact with the right-hand vertical face of the side gage stop or guide proper 23. Assuming that the contrivance as a whole has been properly adjusted lengthwise of the platen along the rod 11 it is fixed or set by tightening the thumb screw 18. It may be said here that the contrivance is readily adjusted by pulling it away from the rod 9 to the dotted line position in Fig. 2 after which the set screw may be loosened and the contrivance slid to desired position before re-tightening The spring 14: will restore the hook 24 to engagement with the rod 9 and it will be observed that this spring has a double function as after such restoration its tension will be exertedto communicate pressure to the pressure bail, increasing the pressure of the rolls 10 against the platen. Let it further be assumed that the amount to be written is ten thousand dollars, the knob or button 31 is I swung to the left as far as it will go or until the stop pin 38 arrests the gear segment as shown in Fig. 4, at which time the stem or handle portion 30 will be opposite the TT indicating mark as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The movement of the finger plece or key causes the connections or rack and gear elements 19 and 29 to cooperate to move the device 20 on its support 19, the gage proper.
23 traveling toward the left lengthwise of the platen until the parts are arrested by the stop pin 38 which has the additional function of preventing the device 20 from being disconnected from its support. The check P is then introduced, being properly positioned lengthwise of the platen, by means of the gage 23 and the various printing and spacing operations described in detail in said prior application are carried out, after which the check is removed and the operations repeated with a new check. This is the limit of movement'toward the right as determined by contact of the handle portion 30 with the stop pin 38.
It will be observed that the key controlled gage 23 is settable progressively or step-bystep at letter space intervals lengthwise of the platen so as to position said gage denominationally without affecting or disturbing the setting of the support 17 which remains in the same set position for all of the six denominational settings of which the gage 23 is capable. I urther it will be seen that the contrivance as a whole may beset in any desired position along the platen and that when set in this desired position the single gage which replaces the set of gages in my prior construction may be independently set in any one of six denominational positions, the connections or setting means 31, 30, 29, 19 being independent of the setting or fixing means 18 for the contrivance asa whole. While the gage or stop device is adjustable stcp-by-step it may be moved rapidly from one extreme to the other or to any intermediate position, the detent spring clicking over the teeth of the rack 19 during such movement. Said rack when once set remains fixed while the cooperating gear segment 29 moves bodily or as a whole as well as receives a rotary movement when its key is actuated.
Various changes may be made without departing from my invention.
What I claim as new and by Letters Patent, is
1. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a denominational side gage, mechanism which when operated causes a denominational feeding movement of said gage lengthwise of the platen, and an automatically operating holding device which holds the side gage in set position after it has been fed.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a platen carrier, a denominational side gage contrivance supported from said platen carrier and movable as a whole lengthwise of said platen, and means for positively fixing the position of said contrivance in adjusted positions, said contrivance comprising a gage settable independently of said means.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a platen carrier, a denominational side gage contrivance mounted on said platen carrier, and means for positively fixing said contrivance in adjusted positions lengthwise of said platen, said contrivance comprising a gage, means independ ent of said first recited means for moving said gage step-by-step lengthwise of the platen, and detent devices for maintaining said gage set in adjusted positions.
10. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a platen carrier, a slide, meansfor fixing the position of said slide, a side gage supported by said slide, and rack and gear connections between said slide and said side gage.
11. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a platencarrier, a

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a platen carrier, a slide, means for fixing the position of said slide, a side gage supported by said slide, rack and gear connections between said slide and said side gage, and a detent spring on said side gage cooperative with certain of said rack and gear connections to maintain said side gage in adjusted positions.

Ina typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a platen carrier, a rod on said carrier extending lengthwise of the platen, a slide on said rod and provided with a rack, a thumb screw for fixing the position of said slide, and a side gage device comprising a; side gage proper, a frame partly surrounding said slide, and a gear segment provided with a finger piece and meshing with said rack.
18. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen,- a platen carriage, a gage carrier, a side gage mounted on said carrier, rack and gear connections between said side gage and said carrier, and detent devices cooperative with certainof said rack and gear connections.
