SIG-NOR TO UNDERW'OOD N. Y., A CORZOEATION OF DELA- TY?EW'BITING-IEACHINE.
Application filed December To all "70/2/0771 it may concern:
Be it known that I, Join: C. DOANE, a citizen of the United States, residing in East lilartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting-lilaehines, of which the following is a specification.
ilhis invention relates to typewriting machines and herein disclosed as applied to the platen scale of an Underwood typewritmachine, and is in the nature of an IG"c=111611t on my application, Serial No.
,325, tiled December 5,
1918. In said 7 there is disclosed a platen scale ipted to rise with the shifting Underwood typewriting ma- 1 the scale bears the same relaowe: posi ions of the platen, the scale resiliently mounted on swinging b ac ets, each having one edge adjacent the 1,said brackets adapted to swing so that c said edges follow the platen fairly closely.
in the present disclosure, means are provided to enable the platen scale to form part of a unitary bar or device which extends across the machine adjacent the top of the segment, and is adapted to have both ends moved simultaneously. To maintain the scale near the platen, brackets may be provided onv the sual segment adapted to carry swinging arms, so that the latter may hold the tale against the platen.
features and advantages will here ippear.
oinpanying era ings,
a 1 a perspective VlQW of an Unood ewriting machine showing my ention as applied thereto.
ig, h is a sectional side View of the same, ny parts being shown diagrammatieally, 1' being mitted.
Fig. 3 is a side vie v, partly in section, similar to Fig. but showing the platen in its upper-case position.
In the Underwood typewriting machine, character keys 1, when depressed, carry down their key-levers 9, thereby swinging sub-levers 3 to carry type-bars l upwardly and rearwardly, so that lower-case types 5 and upper-case types 6 on the type-bars will print against the front side of a platen 7, which is rotatably mounted in the platen Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented may 12,
1918. Serial No. 266,200.
ame 8. The platen frame forms part 1' a carriage 9, said carriage having pivoted hereon a rack 10 meshing with a pinion connected to an escapement wheel 12, so at the carriage may be fed along thereby the left at each actuation of any key 1, here being provided for this purpose the rsual dogs 13 and the spring barrel (not siown). in order to actuate the dogs 13,
re is a universal bar 1% fast to a segment 15, which is adapted to be struck by heels 16 on the type-bars a as they approach the platen, and thereby Vibrate the dogs rearwardly.
ll riting is normally done with the lowercase type 5. ll hen it is desired to write in upper case, a shift-key 1'? on the front end of a key-lever 18 is depressed, so that an upstanding arm 19, at the rear end of its lever, will rock a bell-crank 20, forming part a frame which also includes the can riage-shift rail 91. When a key is thus depressed, to lift the rail 91, the platen frame 8 is shifted umvardly, because it runs by a wheel on the rail 21, and is guided in vertical direction by the usual. arms journaied at 2% at the rear of the carriage 9.
Znv order to enable the typist to quickly and accurately identify the position of the characters written on a work-sheet passed around the platen 7, there is provided a scale-plate adjacent the platen and graduated at letter-space intervals to correspond to the spacing of the front scale 26. The scale-plate is relatively short and comprises two ings extending on either side of a slot at the type-guide 28, the slot being deep enough to allow the lowercase type 5 to be clear of the scale-plate 25 when writing in upper-case position.
To enable the scale to rise with the platen when the latter is raised by the rail 21, the bellcrank 20 is provided with a plate 29 on which is fast a forwardly-extending arm 30 connected to the dependent arm 31 of a long transverse bail-like member 32, which includes the scale 25, the connection including a link 33 pivoted to a guide arm which latter is pivot-ally mounted at on a bracket 36. To enable both ends of the bail or member 32 to be raised at once, there is a bell-crank 20 at the other end of the machine, which may be precisely like the first bell-crank, and also provided with an arm 30 connected by a link 33 t0 novided in order to enable the scale-plate 2.5 to le located in its proper position behind the type-{guide 28 ad acent the platen.
in o: lei. to hold the scale-plate 25 in pos1- on .djacent the platen and tolreep it clear f type-guide 28 and the ribbon-carrier are provided a pair of pivoter. a ms ch are adapted. to hear against the 3? an... 38, respectively, and hold the l e against the platen. To enable e arms l2 to do this, each arm is shown a small end projection a l enter an opening 45 in its rod 3'7 and hearii'igr against the edge of that v w a heel so, which be camdesired, in order to make-it bear against the rod 37 or 38, as the i In order that the scale-plate 'ally vertically with i, which itself moves vertically, the pivoted on forwardly-projecting downwardly-projecting are screwed to the face of e segment ll, and which have upturned can '19 into which are threaded shouldered. screws 50 adapter. to form pivots for the in order to make of each dependent 31, talren with its adjacent arms 34 and 88, a oua i-p allel motion. device, the brackets on which he arms 34: are pivoted extend rear-wan 7 from tl e inner face of the n a chine frame to which they are held hy l helow or slip may he.
11079 suostanti BIO?) V ly' in frontof the pivots 50. r an adjustment of 1 wing; arms to vary fie ans e or the link the arms 3 L may l formed of two pieces and 53, and he held together hy screws 5% threaded into the .e I ano adapted to pass through e ongated slots in the member 52. Such an; ustmentis possible becausethelinlrs may he nearly vertical, and, therefore, llow for consid isle adjustment to and fro of ;he arms 8- Since the'vertical arms 31 :r-e pivoted on screws 56 threaded into the members the member 53 is provided with an additional slot 5? to prevent the pivot 56 from interferingwith the aforesaid adj ustmcnt.
Since the bail member 32 is long, and prererahly rather light, and includes an offset bend 58 at each end to bring the to proper position. the hail member is provided with means adapted 1:01 resist the shock of a work-sheet which may he s 51., so "natthe pivots 35 are nearly In the present disclosure, this means for" receiving the shock is shown as a link 59 pivoted on an ear ()0 of the bail memher 8:2, said link extending to the adjacent bracket a? to which it is pivoted by an upturned ear engaged by a. headed screw 61. The link 59 has its pivots 60 and 61 so related that they cause the scale-plate 25 to hear the same relation to the type-guide in both its upper and low positions To effect this, the pivot (30 is sonfiewhat below the pivot 61 in the lower-case printing position.
Variations may he resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the im n'orements may he used without others.
