Be it known that I, ARTHUR A. J oniyso r, a citizen of the United States, residing in \Vashington, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to typewriting machines of the class shown inthe patent to ernery & Smith, No. 1,132,055, dated March 16, 1915, in which a longitudinally folded Web is led around a revoluble platen of a typewriting machine, the latter having provisions for carrying carbons between .the plies of the web and for shifting the carbons back to fresh portions of the web as the typing proceeds the web usually compr sing a succession of printed forms, each-of which is torn off as soon as typed.
Heretofore, it has been proposed to use,

In order to withdraw the pins from the perforations, provision is made of means controlled by a finger-piece on the usual carbon-carrier handle for lifting said pins simultaneously to ineffective position. Preferably, such lifting means is normally urged to operate by suitable urging means, such as a spring. Io render the pin-lifting means ineffective, provision is made of a finger-piece upon the carbon-carrier suitably connected to the lifting means, and also of a latching device'which will normally prevent lifting of the pins-by said lifting means. In Order to rendersaid latching device ineffective, provision may be made for automatically shifting the same to ineffective position upon 'movement of the carbon-carrier to its forward limiting position.
- When the pins rest in perforations in the superposed plies, the plies may be fed around the platen and typing effected thereon. Upon completion of the last entry on a set of superposed forms, the platen may be thrown up in the usual manner to enable straightening of the plies and the carboncarrier advanced sufficiently to render the latch ineffective. Inasmuch as superposed plies have been maintained in proper relative position where engaged by the pins, the straightening of the plieswill effect a reali nment of the forwardly-extending forms,

A platen 1 is supported on anaxle 2 journaled, in the ends 3 of a lifting frame 4 which includes a front paper-table 5. The ends of the lifting frame are pivotally mounted on a rod 6, extending from one end to the other of a typewriter carriage 7, the ends 3 of the lifting frame being provided with arms 8, which, when'the platen 1s in its normal position, will rest on a rod 9 supported by the carriage. The platen is then in osition to co-operate with a rear papertab e 10 and rear and front feed-rolls 11 and 12, respectively, in feeding worlg around the platen.
Connected with the typewriter carriage 7 is .a rearward extension, comprising front and rear rods 13 and 14:, respectively, connected by rails 15, on which a carbon-carrier 16 is mounted for movement toward and from the platen. The carbon-carrier may be provided with blades 17, from which extend carbon -sheets, and an arm 1-8 extending toward the front of the machine to fa cilitate shiftingof the carriage by the operator, the arm 18 preferably being bent at right angles near its endfto form a fingerpiece 19. l The separate plies or webs 22 are led from any suitable-source of supply over the" rod 14% at the rear of the machine, and are arranged with respect to the blades 17 so that carbon-sheets 2-3, secured. to the blades, will be interleaved between the plies; the forward ends of the carbon-sheets and webs being passed beneath the platen in raised position, as shown inFigure 3, and over aknife 24% supported by the ends 3 of the lifting frame. The platen is then swung down to normal position, as shown in Figure 1, and typing is effected on the webs or plies by means of types 25 on type-bars 26.
According to the present invention, provision is made of means to prevent relative displacement between corresponding superposed forms on the different plies, due tothe tendency of the plies to creep when fed around the platen. To this end, provision is made of perforations in the plies, so positioned that, when a set of superposed forms is in position to begin typing thereon, as shown in Figure 1, pins 28 mounted at the rear of the carbon-carrier may pass into said perforations, thereby preventing displacement of the various webs where engaged by I the pins. Preferably, the pins 28 are mount-v ed for vertical sliding movement in brackets 29 supported on the sides of the carbon-carrier, and are normally urged downwardly by springs 30 having forked ends engaging grooves in the upper ends of the pins. When the pins 28 are in their lowest positions, as shown in Figure 1, their lowerends extend into perforations in a support 31 on which the plies rest. The support 31 is here shown as a channel plate concave downwardly and having a flange 32 by which it may be fastened to the carbon-carrier 16 in any suitable manner, as by screws 32. v
In order to lift the pins 28 from effective position, provision may bemade of a rockshaft 33 supported on the carbon-carrier 16 at the rear of the pins and having secured thereto suitable arms 34, preferably in the formof leaf-springs and extending .beneath pins 35 projecting from the pins 28. The arms 34 may be secured to the shaft 33 by any suitable means, such as screws36. At the end of the shaft 33, near the arm 18 of the carbon-carrier, a'downwardly-extending arm 37 is fixed thereon, and the shaft is urged to rotate in a counter-clockwise,direction by means of a leaf-spring. 38 securedv at one end to the arm 18 and at the other end to said arm 37,thereby tending to lift the pins 28 to ineffective position. The connection between the spring 38 and thearm 37 may be effected-in any suitable manner, as, for example, byinserting'the-end ofspring 88 ina slot formed in the arm .37. To rock the shaft 33. in'clockwise direction to permit pins 28 to descend, provision is made-of. a link 39 plvotedat' its rear end to the lower 1 end of arm 37 and at its forwarde'nd to "the lower end'of a lever 40, pivoted at 41 on arm 18 and provided with a finger-piece 42 atits upper end, so. that,.upon pressing finger piece 42 towardfinger-piece 19 by, grasping the same between the thumb .and finger, the
shaft 33 will be rockedto the F igure 1 podepressed positipn, provision is made of a latch-lever 44: plvoted at 45. on arm 18 and. 130
urged upwardly by a spring 46, so that, when the arm 37 is in its Figure 1 posit on, the rear end of the lever will be moved into the path of arm 37 to prevent its movement in a counter-clockwise direction, the movement of the lever 44 under the influence of spring 46 being limited by means of a pin 4 projecting from arm 18. When the typing is completed on one set of superposed forms, the carbon-carrier will be 1n an advanced position, and it will be necessary to release the same from the superposed pl es and return it to theleft, as shown in Fig- 'ure 1, so as to permit the pins28 to enter another set of perforations in the plles. To this end, the forward end of lever 44 is provided with a laterally-extending cam-member 48, which, upon the advance of the carbon-carrier to the limit of its forward movement, will engage the rearward end of a screw 49, threaded into the stop 21, and ride upwardly thereon, thereby rocking the lever 44 and releasing the arm 37 to the influence of the spring 38. The pins 28 will then be lifted to Figure, 3 position. It will be evident that, by adjusting the posltlon of the screw 49, the release of the arm 37 may be varied wlthout shifting the stop 21.
The carbon-carrier may then beshifted to the rear, as shown in Figure 3, and the pins 28 released by actuation of the finger-piece 42, thereby causing the pins 28 to co-operate with the superposed plies 22, as shown 1n Figure 1. If desired, the finger-piece 42 may be actuated before the carbon-carrier 1s restored to its original position, and the pins 28 will then ride on the surfaces of the upper ply and drop into the Figure 1 position when the carrier reaches the rearward limit of its'movement.
It will be evident that the pins 28 not only serve to maintain the superposed plies against relative movement during the forward movement of the carbon-carrier, but also serve to assure proper alignment or register between the forms on the superposed lies.
p An important feature of this invention is the provision of means whereby the extent of feed of the web is controlled without the usual leading-edge gage. Another important feature is that the webs. are not intercepted in their movements by the pins: The paper and pins are relatively stationary when engagement is efi'ected.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, ll claim:
1. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a carriage therefor having a rearward extension, a carbon-carrier mounted for forward and rearward movement on said extension, and means to prevent cumulative creeping of separate plies fed around said platen, comprising pins mounted on said carrier, 50 that they may be projected into correspondingly positioned perforations in superposed forms on the separate plies, and thereby prevent relative displacement of the forms to the rear of said pins during the feeding of the forms in advance of said pins around the platen.
2. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a carriage therefor having a rearward extension, a carbon-carrier mounted for forward and rearward movement on said extension, and means to prevent cumulative creeping of separate plies fed around said platen, -comprising pins mounted on said carrier, so that they may be projected into correspondingly positioned perforations in superposed forms on the separate plies, and thereby prevent relative displacement of the forms to the rear of said pins during the feeding of the forms in advance of said pins around the platen, and means for withdrawing said pins simultaneously.
3. in a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a carriage therefor having a rearward extension, a carbon-carrier mounted for forward and rearward movement on said extension, and means to prevent cumulative creeping of separate plies fed around said platen, comprising pins mounted on said carrier, so that they may be projected into correspondingly positioned perforations in superposed forms on the separate plies, and thereby prevent relative displacement of the forms to the rear of said pins during the feeding of the forms in advance of said pins around the platen, means for withdrawing said pins simultaneously, and means normally urging said withdrawing means to effective position.
4. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a carriage therefor having a rearward extension, a carbon-can rier mounted for forward and rearward movement on said extension, and means to prevent cumulative creeping ofseparate plies fed around said platen, comprising pins mounted on said carrier, so that they may be projected into correspondingly positioned perforations in superposed forms on the separate plies, and thereby prevent relative displacement of the forms to the rear of said pins during the feeding of the forms in advance of said pins around the platen, means for withdrawing said pins simultaneously, means normally urging said withdrawing means to effective position, and a latching device to maintain said withdrawing means in ineffective position.
5. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a carriage therefor having a rearward extension, a carbon-carrier mounted for forward and rearward I platen, means for withdrawing said pins simultaneously, means normally urging said withdrawing means to effective position, a
latching device to maintain said withdrawing means in ineffective position, and means whereby advance of said carrier to a prede- 'termi'ned' position will cause said latching device to be rendered ineffective.

In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a carriage therefor tion, a revoluble platen, a carriage therefor having arearward extension, a carbon-carrier mounted for .forward and rearward movement on said extension, and means to prevent cumulative creeping of separate plies fed around said platen, comprising pins mounted on said carrier, so that they may be'projected into correspondingly positioned perforations in superposed forms on the separate plies to prevent relative displacement of the forms during the feeding of the plies around the platen, and means for withdrawing said pins simultaneously, I
comprising a projection on each of the pins, a shaft, arms on said shaft underlying said projections and means to turn said shaft.
7. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a carriage therefor having a rearward extension, a carbon-can rier mounted for forward and rearward movement on said extension, and means to prevent cumulative creeping of separate plies fed around said platen, comprising pins mounted on said carrier, so that they may be projected into correspondingly positioned perforations in superposed forms on the separate plies to prevent relative dis- I placement of the forms during the feeding of the plies around the platen, and means for withdrawing said pins simultaneously, comprising a projection on each of the pins,
a shaft, arms projecting from said shaft and underlying said projections and means to urge said shaft to turn in a direction to withdraw said pins.
8. In a typewriting machine, in combinahaving a rearward extension, a carbon-carrier mounted for forward and rearward movement on said extension, means to prevent cumulative creeping of separate plies plies fed around said platen, comprising pins mounted on said carrier, so that they may be projected into correspondingly positioned perforations in superposed forms on the separate plies to prevent relative displacement of the forms during the feeding of the plies aroundthe platen, means for withdrawing said pins simultaneously, comprising a projection oneach of the pins, a shaft, arms projecting from said shaft and underlying said projections and means to urge said shaft to turn in a direction to withdraw said pins, and means including a latching device to retain said shaft in ineffective position.
9; In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a carriage therefor havinga rearward extension, a carboncarrier mounted for forward and rearward movement on said extension, means to pre* vent cumulative creeping'of separate plies fed around said platen, comprising pins mounted on said carrier, so that they may be projected into correspondingly positioned perforations in superposed forms on the separate plies to revent relative displacement of the forms during the feeding of the plies around the, platen, means for withdrawing said pins simultaneously, com'- prising a projection on eachlof the pins, a shaft,-'arms projecting from said shaft and underlying said projections and means to urge said shaft to turn in a direction to withdraw said pins, means including a latching device to retain said shaft in ineffective position, and means controlled by said carbon-carrier for automatically releasing said latching device to permit said shaft to turn and withdraw said pins to ineffective position.
10. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a carriage therefor having a rearward extension, afcarbon-carrier mounted for forward and rearward movement on said extension, means to prevent cumulative creeping of separate plies fed around said platen, comprising pins mounted on said carrier, so that they may be projected into correspondingly positioned perforations in superposed forms on the separate plies to prevent relative displacement ofthe forms when the plies are fed around the platen, and means for withdrawing said pins simultaneously, including a member urged in one direction, means whereby movement of said member in said direction will efiect the withdrawal of said pins, and movement in the opposite direction will release said pins, and means for latching said member in ineffective position.

In a ty ewriting machine, in combination, a revo uble platen, a carriage therefor having a rearward extension, a carboncarrier mounted for forward and rearward movement on said extension, means to prevent cumulative creeping of separate plies fed around said :platen, comprising pins mounted on said carrier, so that they may be projected into correspondingly positioned perforations in superposed forms on the I I separate plies to prevent relative displacement of the forms when the plies are fed around the platen, means for withdrawing .said pins simultaneously, including a member urged in one direction, means whereby movement of said member in said direction will eflect the withdrawal of said pins, and movement in the opposite direction will release said pins, means for latching said member in inefiective position, and automatic insane to release said member from the latch- 1ng means when the carbon-carrier is moved to a predetermined position) 12. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a carriage therefor having a rearward extension, a carboncarrier mounted for forward and rearward movement on said extension, means to prevent cumulative creeping of separate plies fed around said platen, comprising pins mounted on said carrier, so that they may be projected into correspondingly positioned perforations on superposed forms on the separate plies to prevent relative displacement of the forms during the feeding of the plies around the platen, and a support for said plies, on the carrier, having perforations to receive said pins when the latter pass through perforations in said plies. 13 ..In a typewriting machine, in combina-tioii,'a revoluble platen, a platen-carriage having'a rearward extension, a carbon-carrier shiftable on said extension, pins slidably mounted on said carrier and supportable by a plurality of plies passed through said carrier, except when suitably positioned perforations in the plies are brought into register therewith, spring means rendered effective upon the advance of the carrier to a predetermined position to withdraw said pins, and manually-operable means for restoring said spring means to ineffective condition.
14. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a platen-carriage having a rearward extension, a carbon-carrier, shiftable on said extension, to support carbon sheets interleaved between separate superposedplies, having sets of superposed forms, passing through the carbon-carrier to the platen, and means on said carrier for holding said plies-against relative displace ment, comprising members controlled by the plies, so that the holding meanswill be prevented form becoming eiiective unless the superposed forms on separate plies are in register. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a platen-carriage having a rearward extension, a carbon-carrier, shiftable on said extension, to support carbon-sheets interleaved between separate superposed plies, having sets of superposed forms and correspondingly positioned per superposed plies, having sets of superposed forms and correspondingly positioned per forations, passing through the carbon-carrier to the platen, means on said-carrier for holding the superposed plies against relative movement, said means being held in inefiective condition unless said perforations are in register, and means to automatically release said plies from said holding means when the carrier is advanced to a predetermined position.
17 In a typewriting machine, in combina tion, a revoluble platen, a. platen-carriage having a rearward extension, a carbon-carrier, shiftable on said extension, to support carbon-sheets interleaved between separate superposed plies, having sets of superposed forms and correspondingly positioned perforations, passing through the carbon-carrier to the platen, means on said carrier for holding the superposed plies against relative movement, said means being held in inefiective condition unless said perforations ar in register, and spring means rendered eflec tive to release said plies from said holding means when the carrier is advanced to a predetermined position.
18. In a typewriting machine, in combi- -nation, a revoluble platen, a platen-carriage having a rearward extension, a carbon-carrier, shiftable on said extension, to support carbon-sheets interleaved between separate superposed plies, having sets of superposed forms, and correspondingly positioned perforations, passing through the carbon-carrier to the platen, means on said carrier "for hold-- ing the superposed plies against relative movement, said means being held in ineffective condition unless said perforations are in register, spring means rendered effective to release said plies from said holding means when the carrier is advanced to a predeter mined position, and means to restore said spring means to ineffective condition.
