Abstract

A tool storage case for the storage of tools, particularly twist drill bits, comprises bottom part 1, a cover part 3 hingedly connected thereto and having a frontal wall 3 and side walls 4, and a single or multiple tool-retaining insert 5 arranged between the said side walls. The side walls 4 of the cover part 2 are provided with cut-outs 15 in the shape of slots which correspond to projections on the tool-retaining insert 5 and co-act with said projections by snap-fit engagement. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Tool storage case The present invention relates to a tool storage case for storing tools, more particulary but not exclusively twist drill bits, and of the kind comprising a bottom part, a cover part hingedly connected thereto and comprising a frontal wall and side walls adjoining the edges thereof at approximately right angles, a singleor multiple part tool-retaining insert located between said side walls and means securing said insert to said cover.
In known tool storage cases of the kind specified the tools, for example twist drill bits, are ffitted in the tool-retaining insert while this is detached from the cover and bottom parts of the case and subsequently the insert, now fully equipped with tools, is secured in position.
The advantage of proceeding in this fashion resides in that the operation of locating the tools in the insert in not impeded or obstructed by the fact that, for constructional reasons, in the fully completed assembly the tool-retaining insert must be positioned comparatively closely adjacent the cover part.
These known constructions incorporate ribs on the insert which must be located between guide ribs on the side walls and have the distinct drawback that it is relatively awkward and expensive to connect the fully equipped tool retaining insert with the cover and bottom parts of the case, in as much as the ribs of the insert must be slid between guiding ledges arranged along the side walls of the cover part which operation demands a precise mutual alignment of insert and cover part.
Such precise mutual alignment must be made either manually, which takes time, or with the aid of a special device.
The object of the present invention is to provide a tool storage case of the kind specified in a simple and convenient form.
According to the invention this aim is achieved by virtue of the fact that the side walls of the cover part are provided with cutouts in the shape of slots which correspond to projections provided on the tool-retaining insert and co-act therewith for snap-fit engagement.
Due to the characteristic features of the invention a tool storage case is created for the very first time, in which the fully equipped tool-retaining insert can be very easily locked to the cover part without any preceding alignment or lining-up process whatsoever. To this end it is merely necessary to place the fully equipped tool-retaining insert on the inwardly directed face of the frontal wall of the cover part and slide it by light pressure application into its final position between the side walls allowing the rib-projections of the insert to snap automatically into the slots of the side walls. There is no longer any need to rely on guiding ledges or channels into which the insert would have to be carefully located prior to being locked fast to the cover part.
Where the tool-retaining insert consists of two or more component parts it will be an advantage for the said component parts of the tool retaining insert to be adapted to be nested or fitted into one another in a place which is at right angles relative to the frontal wall of the cover part and for the said projec tions or cut-outs to be provided on that com ponent part of the insert which is furthest from the frontal cover wall. In such an ar rangement it is not necessary to provide snap fit engagement for every cover part, rather, the component parts of the tool retaining insert may be interfitted or nested in a first operational step and then snap-fitted jointly to the cove part.
The various parts of the case may be manu factured from any suitable material, but spe cial advantages are obtained when the cover and bottom parts as well as the tool-retaining insert consist of plastics material, preferably polystyrene.
On the other hand, it is perfectly possible to make the bottom and cover parts of the case from sheet steel and the tool-retaining insert from plastics material in known manner.
A further advantage of the construction ac cording to this invention resides in that only the tool-retaining insert, and not the bottom and cover parts of the case require modifica tion for their adaptation to different types of tools. It is therefore possible to provide vari ous relatively different tool-retaining inserts for one and the same bottom and cover part design, which simplifies stock-holding prob lems.
An example of a tool storage case in accor dance with the invention will now be de scribed with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the tool supporting insert, and Figure 2 is a perspective view of the fully assembled tool storage case.
The storage case includes a base portion 1 and a cover portion 2 which are connected together by hinges. The cover portion has a frontal wall 3 and side walls 4 which extend at right angles to the frontal wall. The base portion has a frontal wall 1 6 and side walls the latter being shaped in conjunction with the side walls of the cover portion so that in the closed position of the case the contents of the case are fully enclosed while at the same time allowing easy access to the tools con tained within the case when the latter is in the open position shown.
Located in the cover portion 2 is in the particular example, a multipart tool supporting insert 5 as shown in Fig. 2, the two parts 6 and 7 of which nest together to provide recesses for two rows of tools for example twist drills, each part providing accommodation for one row of tools. The part 7 which is adjacent the frontal wall 3 has side walls which define locating recesses 10, 11 into which are received extended portions 8, 9 respectively of the side walls 1 3 of the other part.
The recesses 10, 11 and the projections 8, 9 locate the two parts of the insert relative to each other and in order to secure the insert to the cover portion, the side walls 4 of the latter are provided with elongated slots 1 5 which are spaced from but extend substantially parallel to the frontal wall 3. For engagement in the slots the side walls 1 3 of the part 6 are provided with laterally extending projections or ribs 1 2. The ribs 1 2 have a length such that they can locate in the slots 1 5 and the engagement is effected very simply by sliding the insert into position, this process being achieved very easily with slight flexure of the side walls 4.

Claims (3)

1. A tool storage case for storing tools, more particularly but not exclusively twist drill bits, and of the kind comprising a bottom part, a cover part hingedly connected thereto and comprising a frontal wall and side walls adjoining the edges thereof at approximately right angles, a single or multiple part toolretaining insert located between said side walls and being provided in the region of its lateral surfaces which face said side walls, with projections in the shape of elongated ribs extending approximately parallel with the plane of the frontal cover wall characterised in that the side walls of the cover part are provided with cut-outs which correspond with the projections on the tool-retaining insert said cut-outs being of slot configuration and coacting by snap-fit engagement with said projections.
2. A storage case according to Claim 1, comprising a multiple part tool-retaining insert in which the component parts are adapted to be interfitted nestingly in a vertical plane relative to the frontal wall of the cover part, characterised in that the aforesaid projections are provided on the component part of the tool-retaining insert which is furthest from the frontal cover wall.
3. A tool storage case for storing tools comprising the combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinbefore de scribed with reference to the accompanying drawings.
