Abstract

212,089. Amberton, R. Feb. 22, 1923. Controllers with combinations of resistances.- Relates to resistance controllers of the kind in which a coarsely divided rheostat and a finely divided rheostat are electrically and mechaniinterconnected so as to give a very large number of small resistance steps. A manually turned spindle 4 carries an arm 3 repeatedly over an inner circle of contacts 1 connected to sections of the finely-divided resistance 2, each complete revolution of the arm, by impact upon a star wheel 33 geared to a sprocket 30, advancing a second concentric arm 8 one step at a time. The arm 8 carries a main brush 9 over a semicircle of contacts 15 connected to sections of the coarsely divided resistance 17. The arm also carrying an auxiliary brush 10 over a semicircle of alternate live and d'ead contact studs 16 provides for sparkless transitions of the coarse rheostat brush. The electric connections are such that the fine resistance is in parallel successively with each section of the coarse resistance.
