Abstract

212,068. H÷lken, M. Feb. 13, 1923. Ammoniacal-copper cellulose solutions, processes for making filaments from; apparatus for making filaments.-In the manufacture of artificial silk threads from ammoniacal-copper cellulose solutions, the bundle of relatively-thick threads after leaving the coagulating-liquid is conducted through an open air path at least equal in length to, and preferably a multiple of, the length of the path in the coagulating-liquid, a substantial frictional resistance, as for instance, a glass rod, being interposed between the two paths in order that there may be a drawing-out of the bundle of filaments in the two paths. In the apparatus shown, the bundle of threads projected downwardly from the spinning head b enter the funnel n, being carried along with increasing velocity by the coagulating-liquid lowing therethrough; on leaving the funnel, the threads pass round a glass rod f over guides g, h, the second of which reciprocates, to a reel l on which they are treated with hardening-liquid projected from a pipe k. To obtain the necessary drawing-out of the threads, the peripheral velocity of the reel is arranged to be considerably in excess of that with which the threads enter the coagulating-liquid. The diameter of the reel is at least equal to the path through the coagulating-liquid.
