Abstract

211,992. Whelan, W. Dec. 9, 1922. Ball bearings.-Marine horse-shoe shaped thrust' shoes a which co-operate with thrust collars c on a shaft b are provided with ball bearings of the type in which the ball races have the form of closed curves which do not encircle the shaft, and in which the balls are retained by slotted plates, and come into and out of contact with the bearing surfaces on the shaft. As shown in Fig. 1, the ball races d, which are cut either in the thrust shoe itself or in steel blocks recessed therein are of kidney shape, and the balls are retained in the races by plates e, f, g. Projections h or dowel pins may be fitted to the thrust shoe to permit exact replacement of the plate e after removal. The races may be deepened and widened at the parts'not concentric with the shaft and the plate g may be removed when it is necessary to remove or inspect the balls. The thrust shoe may have only one bearing surface, or it may have a bearing surface on both sides, each engaging a separate thrust collar. In a modification, Fig. 4, two sets of races, each comprising a ball race surrounded by another race, are arranged on each side of a thrust shoe and a single plate p for two plates q permit of the removal of the balls. In a further modification two kidney-shaped races only are arranged on each side of a thrust shoe. Specification 153,961 is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
