Abstract

398,274. Ball bearings. WHELAN, W., 6, Wingfield Villas, Devonport. April 4, 1932, No. 9585. [Class 12 (i).] In a thrust bearing of the type in which the thrust block is formed with ball races provided with balls which roll into or out of contact with collars fitted to the shaft, the thrust block is yieldably mounted between springs. In the form shown, the shoes e<1> of the thrust block are mounted at each side of a flange c on the shaft b and are provided with deep outer races f and segmental members g having shallow inner races f<1>. The shoes have cover plates h wherein elongated slots h<1> are formed in register with the inner races. The races f, f<1> in conjunction with the slots h<1>, constitute endless guide tracks for the balls j which roll into and out of contact with the collars d on the flange c. The balls are inserted into the races through a normally sealed opening in the cover plate. The shoes are carried on rods k carried by the frame a, compression springs n being disposed between spigot washers o and cup-shaped nuts q on the rod k. In a modification the thrust block consists of only one shoe having ball races in both faces and being yieldably mounted between a pair of shaft flanges. Removable covers may be provided for the springs.
