Abstract

A threaded member 1, e.g. a connecting rod for a brake actuator is provided with two adjacent screw threaded portions 2, 3 of like sense but different pitch such as to provide easy locking up of members 4, 5 threaded onto the respective portions, which allows the rod to be turned by means of one of the members 4 or 5. The threaded portions 2, 3 are preferably of different diameters in order that with members 4, 5 can be mounted on the member 1 from the same end. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Locking arrangements This invention relates to locking arrangements and relates especially to means for locking a threaded member to a further matching threaded member.
According to the present invention there is provided a first screw threaded member having a first screw threaded portion the pitch of the thread of which is greater than that of a second screw threaded portion, a second member having a screw thread matching the first portion and a third member having a screw thread matching the second portion for locking said second member in relation to the first member.
In order that the invention may be more clearly understood and readily carried into effect the same wiil be further described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing the single of which illustrates in diagrammatical form part of an apparatus embodying the invention.
Referring to Fig. 1, this shows a first member in the form of a rod 1 having a first screw threaded portion 2 and a second screw threaded portion 3, the first threaded portion being of greater diameter but the thread is of smaller pitch than the second threaded portion 3. A second member 4 is threaded with a screw thread which matches the thread of the first portion 2 and a third member in the form of a locking nut 5 has a thread which matches the thread of the second portion 3. In use of the arrangement, the second member 4 can be so screwed against the end 6 of the first threaded portion 2 and the third member 5 may be screwed into abutment with the face 7 of the second portion adjacent thereto. The threads of portions 2 and 3 are both right handed or both left handed. Therefore, any attempt to screw the first member 1 rightwards in relation to the second member 2 results in a tendency for the third member 5 to move leftwards and further tighten against the second member 4. The result of this is an increasing locking force locking the member 1 in relation to the held member 4.
One application for such an arrangement is in the connection between a vehicle spring brake actuator rod and a cable linkage where it is desirable to provide means for easily preventing rotation of a rod in relation to a turn buckle during manual release of an applied brake. Such release is occasionally required when no air pressure is available, so that the vehicle can be towed for example. The turn buckle in this case threaded onto the portion 3 additionally to and to the right of the locking nut 5. The member 4 can conveniently be provided with an hexagon for ease of holding and the member 5 can be normally used as a locking nut in relation to the turn buckle. To release the spring brake the nut 5 is thus loosened from the turn buckle and tightened against the holding member 4 before the turn buckle is turned to release the brake.
Claims (Filed on 4th February 1982) 1. A locking arrangement comprising a first screw-threaded member having a first screw threaded portion the pitch of the thread of which is less than that of a second screw threaded portion said threaded portion being of like sense, a second member having a screw threaded matching the first portion and a third member having a screw thread matching the second portion for locking said second member in relation to the first member for movement tending to drive said second and third members closer together.
2. A locking arrangement as claimed in claim 1 one said threaded portion being of greater diameter than the other said threaded portion whereby both said second and third members can be mounted thereto from the same end.
3. A locking arrangement as claimed in claim 1 or 2 wherein said first and second portions are external threaded portions and said second and third members are internal threaded.
4. A locking arrangement as claimed in any preceding claim incorporated in the connection rod of a spring brake actuator.
5. A locking arrangement substantiates as described herein with reference to the accompanying drawings.
