Abstract

A method of attaching together an internally threaded member and an externally threaded member, where either a) the externally threaded member possesses separate right hand and left hand threads, or b) the internally threaded member possesses separate right hand and left hand threads; in both cases, the co-operating threaded member is manufactured with both right hand and left hand threads superimposed on each other. For instance, where it is desired to fit the same accessory onto either end of a rotating drive shaft on a wood lathe, the nut or the shaft could have the superimposed right and left hand threads. In such cases the nut will be self tightening. The thread details are independent.

Description

SPECIFICATION Superimposed thread forms This application concerns the ability to attach an internally threaded member onto an externally threaded member where:- (a) The externally threaded member may possess a right hand or a left hand thread.
or (b) The internally threaded member may possess a right hand or a left hand thread.
For instance where it is desired to fit the same accessory onto either end of a rotating drive shaft (that shaft having a right hand thread at one end and a left hand thread at the other - as on a wood lathe) then the principle of this application could be used.
This application is based on the fact that: For case (a) the 'nut' is manufactured with both threads -- one being superimposed on the other, while the 'shaft' (or whatever is the case) has either a right hand or a left hand thread.
For case (b) the 'shaft' is manufactured with both threads -- one being superimposed on the other, while the 'nut' has either a right hand or a left hand thread.
The thread sizes used for the right hand and left hand threads are independent and, subject to geometrical constraints, they may have the same or different pitch. Similarly, they may have the same or different included angle. The thread form and number of thread starts is also not restricted.
1. A method of attaching an accessory to either end of a rotating shaft (that shaft rotating in one direction only such that is will not tend to release itself when a torque (also in one direction only) is applied to the accessory.
(e.g. as an accessory on a wood lathe).
2. A method of attaching two threaded members together such that one may have a right hand and a left hand thread and be screwed onto a left or a right hand thread.
