Abstract

A navigation lantern for use as a beacon or buoy achieves a high intensity light output without the need for a cylindrical glass lens of large diameter by providing, in the vicinity of the focal point of the lens, a light source comprising at least two halogen type lamps. The use of more than one lamp assists in avoiding undue vertical divergence of the high intensity beam issuing from the lens, and reduces the concentration of heat generated in the lantern. Damage to lamp control electronics by heat from the lamps is further safeguarded against by the provision of a heat shield between the lamps and a terminal support block. Preferably the shield is spaced from the support block.
