Abstract

209,791. Brown, D. H. Sept. 21, 1922. Scoring-apparatus. - Relates to apparatus for recording sequences of events, particularly the scores in lawntennis. The apparatus, which is adapted to be contained in a watchcasing for attachment to the wrist, comprises two sets of scoring devices operated by plungers or levers against the action of springs, each set having a series of scoring dials for each player. In scoring lawn-tennis, points are added by pressing the appropriate plunger k which causes the pawl 15 which it carries to rotate a ratchetwheel 10 carried by a spring drum z, which drum is then rotated one twenty-fourth of a revolution. Teeth y on the drum z engage a pinion on one spindle 2, to rotate a dial carried by the spindle one-sixth of a revolution, a numeral carried by the dial being displayed at a " point " aperture in the casing. On four points being scored, teeth on a wheel 26 on the spindle 2 engage a toothed wheel 27 on a spindle 3, turning it one-sixth of a revolution, to display a numeral in a " game " aperture. In a similar manner, " sets " are displayed by the engagement of the teeth on a wheel 28 on the spfindle 3 with a wheel 29 on a spindle 4. On the winning of a game by one player, the points scored by the other player are cancelled by the operation of a lever l which carries a member 24 which engages a spring- pressed pawl 11. As the pawl 11 is moved into engagement with a ratchet-wheel 9 carried by the drum z, a projection 23 on a second pawl 20 is pressed, bringing the pawl 20 out of engagement with the wheel 9. The drum z is thus allowed to move backwards a definite amount by the spring x unwinding and the player's points are cancelled. In a similar manner " game " and " set " scores are cancelled by the operation of levers m, n, which release ratchet-wheels 8, 7 on the drum z. If it is necessary to score " advantage " points, a lever p is moved to operate by means of a toothed segment a dial which displays the point in an appropriate aperture. A similar arrangement may be employed for " advantage " games, or, alternatively, means for the cancellation of a game are provided.
