Abstract
209,482. Guest, J. J. Oct. 10, 1922. Gear-cutting.-Gearing-worms of globoidal form are produced by the rotation of a tool, such as a cutter or grinding-wheel, in bearings carried on a swinging frame, the axes of the frame and worm blank assuming the positions eventually to be taken by the axes of the worm-wheel and worm, respectively, the frame and blank being given the motions of the required worm-wheel and worm, and the axis of the tool spindle being inclined to the axis of the frame. The worm-wheel is cut by a hob shaped to the form of the worm. A conical tool 7 is shown carried in bearings on a frame 5 turning on the worm-wheel axis 1, 2. The worm blank 8 turns on its axis 3, 4 as the frame 5 swings about the axis 1, 2 and may be secured adjustably on its driving spindle 6 to enable multiple-start threads to be cut. The reverse face of the worm may be cut by a similar operation or bv another surface such as the flat base of the cone 7. Two lines of contact 13, 14 between the worm and wheel are constantly in motion on the surfaces of the gearing parts.
