Abstract

An adhesive preparation for use in fixing ceramic tiles, either as a ready-mixed composition or as a composition to be mixed with liquid prior to use, has incorporated therein an odoriferous substance, such as a perfume.

Description

SPECIFICATION Adhesive compositions This invention concerns adhesive preparations for use in fixing ceramic tiles, either as ready mixed compositions or as compositions to be mixed with liquids prior to use.
Tiles are often fixed to walls of rooms in which an easily cleaned surface is desired for the purposes of hygiene. Such rooms include kitchens and bathrooms where a pleasantly smelling atmosphere is also often desired. Furthermore known adhesive preparatins may contain ingredients which have unpleasant odours.
The object of this invention is to provide an adhesive preparation capable of imparting a pleasant odour to a room in which it has been used.
Accordingly this invention provides an adhesive preparation having incorporated therein an odoriferous substance.
The odoriferous substance may be a perfume, for example, for imparting an odour like that of pine, rose, cologne, or may even be a blend of perfume oils. Clearly, the odoriferous substance will be chosen according to the desired odour.
Particularly suitable as odoriferous substances are certain aromatic compounds, such as esters and aldehydes. Examples of these are methyl anthranilate.
and piperonal
Suitable specific examples of perfumes are those known as Cologne Al 05257 and Starlite A105258.
The odoriferous substance may be incorporated in the adhesive preparations in any suitable way and may be a liquid (oil) or solid (powder) which is readily dispersed in the adhesive preparation.
Alternatively, the odoriferous substance may be in the form of microencapsulated particles which are dispersed in the adhesive preparation, thus ensuring gradual release of the odoriferous substance to the atmosphere.
Microencapsulated particles are prepared by a three phase component system consisting of perfume, carrier solution an additive material (a gel type for example) which coagulates on changes of pH allowing the particles to be formed by spray or freeze drying.
The amount of odoriferous substance incorporated in the adhesive preparations will be fairly small, usually from 0.05 to 5% by weight.
The adhesive preparations of the invention may be of three types, namely powder preparations, ready-mixed preparations and two-part preparations.
Powder preparations are usually based on cement, such as white or grey cement, and are mixed with water prior to use. The usual constituents of such compositions are cement, filler, such as silica, and odoriferous substance. They may also contain adhesion promoters, such a polyvinyl alcohol, and water retainers, such as cellulose.
A typical powder adhesive preparation may comprise the following ingredients in percent by weight based on the total preparation: Cement 30 to 70 Filler 30 to 70 Adhesion promoter 0.05 to 5 Water retainer 0.05 to 5 Perfume 0.05 to 5 Ready-mixed adhesive preparations of the invention may be non-water resistant of water resistant.
Non-water resistant adhesive preparations will usually comprise a polymer emulsion in water, such as of polyvinyl acetate, a filler, such as sand, carbonate, clay or gypsum, water and an odoriferous substance. These preparations may also contain one or more of thickeners, such as cellulose, fungicides, such as thiadiazine, pigments such as titanium dioxide, coalescing agents such as 2,2,4-trimethyl-l 3- pentanediolmonoisobutyrate which is sold under the trade name "Texanol", and lightweight fillers, such as Pearlite or Aerosil (fused silica), to increase bulk and or flow properties.
A typical non-water resistant adhesive preparation may comprise the following ingredients in percent by weight based on the total preparation: Polymer Emulsion 5 to 50 Filler 20to80 Thickener 0.05 to 5 Water 10 to 50 Fungicide 0.01 to 5 Pigment 0.05 to 10 Perfume 0.05 to 5 Coalescing agent 0.05 to 5 Lightweight filler 0.05 to 5 Water resistant adhesive preparations will usually comprise a polymer emulsion in water, such as of acrylic polymers or copolymers, a filler such as sand, carbonate, clay or gypsum, water and an odoriferous substance. These preparations may also contain one or more of thickeners, such as cellulose, fungicides, such as Thiadiazine, pigments, such as titanium dioxide, coalescing agents, such as that sold under the trade name "Texanol", and lightweight fillers, such as Pearlite or Aerosil (fused silica).
A typical water-resistant adhesive preparation may comprise the following ingredients in percent by weight based on the total preparation: Polymer emulsion 5 to 50 Filler 20 to 80 Thickener 0.05 to 5 Water 5 to 40 Fungicide 0.01 to 5 Pigment 0.5 to 10 Perfume 0.05 to 5 Coalescing agent 00.5 to 5 Lightweight filler 0.05 to 5 It should be noted that powder and ready-mixed adhesive preparation of the invention may also be used for grouting as well as for fixing tiles.
Two part adhesive preparations usually comprise a powder component based on rubber and liquid component based on a rubber latex. The mixing of two components provides a flexible adhesive.
The powder component usually comprises a cement, such as white or grey cement, a rubber and an odoriferous substance. The powder component may also contain a thickener, such as cellulose. The liquid component usually comprises rubber latex and water but may also contain a fungicide, such as that sold under the Trade Name "Mystox QL" (an aqueous solution of pentachlorophenyl laurate, cetyl pyridinium bromide and parachlorometacresol).
A typical two part adhesive preparation may comprise the following ingredients in each component in percent by weight based on the total component: Powder Component Cement 30 to 70 Rubber 30 to 70 Thickener 0.05 to 5 Perfume 0.05 to 5 Liquid Component Rubber latex 30 to 70 Water 30 to 70 Fungicide 0.01 to 5 The adhesive preparations of the invention may be prepared in any suitable way. Usually the various ingredients will be mixed together in any desired order.
