Percussive tools.-In a tool of the kind in which a hammer member is reciprocated by the centrifugal effect of rotating masses mounted upon it, the rotation of these masses is also made use of to rotate the hammer on its axis, and therefrom the casing and the tool as a whole. The masses o<1>, o<2> are for this purpose mounted on a spindle k which slides in slots in the casing wall, which is given an oscillation about its axis. In a modified arrangement adapted to effect continuous step-by-step rotation, ribs x replace the slots, and the return spring f is mounted so as to yield to torsion also. The motor m is in this case mounted so as to remain stationary with the handle. In the form shown in Fig. 10, the stepby-step rotation is transmitted directly to the tool-holder q by means of lugs y on the hammer shank. The holder q is connected to the casing by a diaphragm r made. of leather impervious. to oil and shaped so as to yield to torsion.
