Abstract
209,237. Cutlery Forgers (Sheffield), Ltd., and Fairest, M. Nov. 2, 1922. Cuttting-edges, shaping and treating.-A knife blade, chisel, &c. 34 is ground or polished by a wheel 3 and is supported on a holder 5, which is mounted on a carriage 6 adapted to reciprocate on guides on a table 7. The carriage is reciprocated by a lever 14 fulcrummed at 15 to the machine frame 1 and oscillated by a pin 12, Fig. 3. which is mounted upon a disc 13 on a shaft 11 and carries a block engaging a slot 16 in the lever. The lever is connected to the carriage by an adjustable link 19, and the length of the stroke of the carriage may be adjusted by adjustment of the throw of the pin 12 and by adjustment of the effective length of the lever. The table 7 is raised, to bring the blade up to the wheel 3, by a two armed lever 22, 23; the position of the table is adjustable by a screw 25. The lever is actuated, during the inward, or idle, stroke of the carriage by a block 28 carried by a slidable bar 27 moved by an abutment 26 on the carriage. The bar 27 is moved outwards, to release the lever and allow the table to fall, at the end of the outward stroke of the carriage by an abutment on the lever 14, which engages a stop 29 on the bar 27. Alternatively, the lever 22, 23. may be actuated by a cam 36 mounted upon the shaft 11, Fig. 1. The machine is started by depressing a pedal 30, whereby a belt is moved on to a fast pulley 9 on a shaft 8, which drives the shaft 11 ; after a complete reciprocation of thecarriage the belt-shifter is moved to return the belt to a loose pulley 10 by a spring 31, the shifter being released by operation of a catch 32 by a projection 33 on a disc carried by the shaft 11. The cutting-edge of a knife is positioned vertically below the axis of the wheel 3 during polishing, or the blade may be disposed at a slight angle to the axis of the wheel. The bladeholder may be rocked about pivots 38, Fig. 6, by rocker arms 39, which engage a slot in a vertically-reciprocating plate 40.
