Abstract

209,230. Lydall, W. M. Oct. 27, 1922. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Vibration-dampers. - A shock-absorber of the friction type for vehicles comprises a cylinder 3 mounted on the chassis 1 and containing a tapered piston 4 which is split into four segments almost to the bottom and provided with a correspondingly split ring 9 so that, on rising, the piston together with its ring 9 moves freely, but on the return stroke wedging action causes the piston to engage frictionally with the cylinder to give a braking action. The movement of the ring relatively to the piston is limited by collars 10, 11. A tapered screw 13 is provided to adjust the piston 4. According to the Provisional Specification, the cylinder is also split and may be connected to the axle or spring of the vehicle, while a spring-loaded sleeve is mounted on the pistonrod and engages a conical recess in the split piston; the piston-rod, on the other side below a fixed collar, is provided with a fixed or loose spring-loaded cone which engages with a conical recess in the underside of the split piston.
