Abstract

A package for tools such as drill bits comprises socket means (6a) for holding said tools and a cover (2) which, like the socket means, is pivoted to a case (1). The cover (2) is initially locked to the case (1) by locking means which must be broken by the user to allow opening of the cover for access to the tools. The locking means may comprise a plug inserted through holes (10, 11). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Cassette
Description The invention relates to a cassette for tools such as taps, counter-sinks or the like, particularly drill bits.
We wish to provide a cassette which is stable and sturdy, technically simple, and is tamper- and theftresistant so that unauthorised persons cannot remove drill bits or other tools contained therein.
In accordance with the invention there is provided a cassette for tools such as drill bits, including an open-fronted case with articulated thereto both of socket means to receive said tools and a cover to completely cover the front of the cassette case, the cover also overlying edge walls of the case, and locking means for holding the case and the cover so that the cover cannot be pivoted relative to the case to an open condition unless the locking means has been broken.
In a preferred embodiment, the locking means includes openings in the case and cover which openins are aligned in the closed condition ofthe cassette and receive a plug which cannot be removed whole.
The plug is advantageously of plastics material but may be metal or a metal alloy.
The openings or holes can be provided in confronting main walls of the cover and the case and/or in the edge wall portions of the case and the cover.
Preferably the head surface of the plug has a particular shape or colour or is distinctively marked in any other manner.
A cassette embodying the invention is advantageous in that its contents will be accessible only after the locking means has been broken because it is only then that the cover may be pivoted open relative to the case. Such theft- or tamper-proof cassette is of substantial significance on the do-ityourself market and particularly in shops or stores of the self-service type. In addition, the cassette can help ensure that the customer will receive a specific manufacturer's products in their original packagings.
Specific implementation of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows a cassette schematically in a completely open condition; Figure 2 shows a portion of a cassette from behind; Figure 3 shows a plug; and Figure 3a shows an alternative plug.
In Figure 1, a transparent cover 2 is articulated by means of pins 3 to a cassette case 1 in such a manner that in the closed condition of the cassette the cover will completely enclose case 1 (with the exception of its bottom and rear wall). Pins 3 also serve to pivotably secure to case 1 socket means 6a having therein a plurality of openings 4 for receiving therein ends of correspondingly sized elongate articles such as drill bits. Also, cover 2 and the case 1 have openings or holes 11 and 10, respectively, which are aligned with each other in the closed condition of the cassette.
In an upper portion of cassette case 1, and in cover 2, speciaily shaped holes 5 and 6, respectively, are provided as an aid for mounting the cassette on a wall. In the closed condition of the cassette, i.e. with the cover overlying case 1, these holes 5, 6 are aligned so that a nail inserted in the wall may extend through the aligned holes to hold the cassette in the desired position.
Figure 2 shows two webs 7, 8 provided above extensions 5a, Sb of hole 5. These webs 7, 8 meet end edge wall 9 of the cassette case and help ensure that a cassette suspended from a nail in a wall will at anytime assume a proper vertical attitidue.
As shown in Figure 2, a side wall of case 1 includes a hole 12. The position of this hole 12 is not critical in the sense that it may be provided anywhere suitable therefor in the edge wall of the case so long as a similar hole is provided at a corresponding position in cover 2 so that these holes are in alignment when the cover overlies the cassette case, i.e. with the cassette being in the closed condition.
The aligned holes (whether 10 and 11, or 12 and its mating hole, or both) receive a plug 13 of plastics, metal or any other suitable material. The plug 13 is inserted or pressed in those holes by its shank 14 preferably in such a manner, e.g. subsequently spread at its unheaded end, that it will serve as an non-releasing latch, say as a rivet. Then, the plug must be removed by breaking before the cassette can be opened and an article, specifically a drill bit or other tool, be removed therefrom. Head 15 of plug 13 is coated with paint in a particular colour or is provided with any desired symbol or shape indicative or the manufacturer or of the particular quality or nature of the cassette's contents.
As shown in Figure 3a, it is possible to provide a plug 13a made of resilient, say of plastics, material and having a tapered end portion 16 with a central slot 17 therein. This plug may be pressed into the aligned holes in the cassette case and the cover from the side. The tapered end portion 16 will deform and then return to the shape shown in Figure 3a after the plug has been inserted. Shouldering of the end portion that faces shank 14 will then retaining ly engage the cover or case wall. In this case too, head 15 may be in a distinctive shape (circular, polygonal, or the like) etc.
CLAIMS 1. 2. Cassette as claimed in claim 1, wherein said locking means includes openings in the case and the cover which openings are aligned when the cassette is closed and receive a plug which cannot be removed whole.
