Abstract

207,638. Browett, T. Sept. 8, 1922. Spring wheels.-A resilient wheel particularly for heavy motor vehicles comprises two discs 1 carrying' a U-section tyre 4, and an intermediate floating disc member 8 supporting the tyre tread and capable of radial movement so that the weight of the vehicle transmitted through the members 1 puts the lower part of the tyre in compression and the upper part in tension. Members 1 have inturned spacing sleeves 2, one member being riveted to a flange on an inner sleeve 3, and the other held by a nut 3<a>. The tyre may be secured by clamping rings 5 or may be held on a flange on members 1 by endless metal bands. Member 8 is slightly larger in diameter than the tyre, so that the latter is stretched when assembled. If necessary to facilitate insertion, the outer portion may be in the form of ring segments 11 inserted separately and then bolted together. As shown, the centre part of member 8 is in two dished portions riveted together. In a modification, the central portion is a single plate stiffened by radial corrugations and having segmental flanged members riveted to its periphery. For driving wheel &c. an Oldhamtype coupling member 13 is introduced, having feather and groove connections 14, 15, at right angles to one another, with member 8 and one member 1. This construction also allows members 1 to be laterally strengthened by cross-stays, the central opening in member 8 being large enough to clear the stays. The invention may be adapted to twin wheels, and a lubricant such as graphite may be introduced within the wheel.
