Abstract

Vapours adsorbed in porous materials such as active carbon, silica gel, and alumina, that have been used, for example, for separating benzol vapour from air, are recovered by direct electric heating of the adsorbent material. The electric current may be supplied to electrodes embedded in the material, the latter acting as a resistance; or the current may be produced indirectly, for example, by currents induced in a ring of conducting-material in the adsorption medium; and the adsorbent material, for example, silica, if not sufficiently conductive, may have mixed with it suitable conducting substances such as carbon or metal powder, or a layer of metal powder may be treated with conductive liquids or it may be converted by physical or chemical treatment into a conducting substance, for example, carbon may be converted into silicon carbide; alternatively, electric resistance heating-elements such as grids or coils may be embodied in the adsorbent materials. Distillation may be assisted by a scavenging gas or vapour, for instance, by supplying water to the adsorbent materials prior to or during the distillation period.
