Abstract
One or more constituents are eliminated from gas mixtures by treatment with porous active carbon impregnated with a solution of an electrolyte adapted on electrolysis to form a reagent which fixes or destroys the adsorbed material, and the gas mixture to be treated is passed through the moist impregnated carbon while the latter is subjected to the action of continuous or intermittent direct current. The electrolyte may be a chloride, preferably a hygroscopic chloride such as calcium chloride. The carbon may be regenerated by washing out the electrolyte, reactivating and reimpregnating, or by heating. The adsorbent may be arranged on a series of trays in a tower. The gas is introduced at the base of the tower, and each layer is subjected to the action of an electric current. According to an example, 1 part of granular active carbon was soaked in 0,3 pts. of calcium chloride in 0,5 pts. of water, and placed in glass tubes. The carbon was held in position by graphite discs acting as electrodes. 18 volts was applied, and a current between 1,5 and 2,5 amps. was passed through the adsorbent. It removed completely the odours arising from decaying animal or vegetable matter. The effluent gases from glue manufacture may be treated, and organic sulphur compounds removed from flue or town gas.
