Abstract

284,758. Hollings, H., Pexton, S., Voss, W. A., and Gas Light & Coke Co. Nov. 2, 1926. Purifying processes.-The purification of coal gas by adsorption methods is carried on under conditions preventing the formation or introduction of impurities within the adsorption sphere. The contact chamber or its exposed surface is composed of material chemically inert towards those fluid constituents which would otherwise generate metallic carbonyls and towards contained impurities such as hydrogen sulphide. Suitable material may be a ceramic enamel. The gas may be preliminarily treated to remove carbonyls or other metallic compounds as by treatment with the same or different adsorption material or with a reagent destructive of such compounds, such as charcoal impregnated with chromates or bichromates or heated copper. The means described in Specification 247,050, [Class 1 (i), Chemical processes &c.], for removing iron carbonyl from gases may be applied. Other adventitious impurities such as alkaline liquids or metalliferous particles are removed from the gas for treatment by or regeneration of the adsorbent, for example by a filter consisting of used adsorption material which has been rejected as exhausted. Specifications 238,984; and 257,879, [Class 1 (i), Chemical processes &c.], are referred to.
