Abstract

A garden label peg comprises first and second panels 1 and 2 connected by a hinge part 3, locking means 5, 6 by which the panels can be secured in folded condition face-to- face with a label therebetween, and a leg portion integral with the panel 2 for insertion in the ground. The panel 1 is transparent and may be provided with serrated lips 7 so that unwanted parts of a seed packet held between the panels may be torn away. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Seed peg This invention is concerned with improvements in and relating to garden plant labels and in particular peg labels for marking rows of seeds when sown.
Presently a wide variety of peg labels are available which are of synthetic plastics, of metal or of wood and the user writes the name of the seeds and/or the variety on the peg label and sticks the peg in the ground. These peg labels are satisfactory to a degree but they tend to become mud splashed and consequent wiping often blurs the written matter.
According to one aspect of this invention there is provided a plant label peg comprising a first and a second body panel, the panels being connected by hinge means integral with each of them, a transparent portion in at least one body panel, locking means by which the body panels are secured in folded condition face-to-face and a leg portion integral with one body panel for insertion in the ground, the peg being foldable to receive between the panels a label, preferably being a printed portion of a seed packet, which is visible through the transparent portion.
Further features and advantages of the present invention will appear from the following description of one embodiment of this invention, given by way of example only, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 is an elevation of a plant peg in unfolded condition; Figure 2 is a section along the line Il-Il of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a section along the line 111-Ill of Figure 2 greatly enlarged for purposes of illustration.
The peg of this embodiment is an injection moulding, preferably of polypropylene, comprising body panels 1, 2 connected by a hinge part 3 integral with each panel, a leg 4 being an extension of panel 2 and a locking element 5 in the form of an undercut stud on one face of one body panel which will snap into, when the panels are folded to a face-to-face condition, and out of when the peg is opened, an aperture 6 in the other body panel.
One panel, here panel 1, is made transparent.
Polypropylene if thin is sufficiently transparent for the present purposes. To provide some rigidity of this panel parallel free edges are formed as lips 7 which will overlie the sides of panel 2. A shallow lip 7a may be provided on the free edge of panel 1.
The leg and body panel 2 is preferably moulded as a thin panel element 8 having a peripheral rib 10 to provide a light leg and body panel while achieving adequate rigidity. Letters of a name may be moulded into this panel, such as that of a seedsman.
To use the peg, a seed packet after sowing the contents, is laid over panel 2, with the printed name of the seeds overlying that panel, the panel 1 is folded and locked by the stud (passing through the trapped part of the packet as necessary) to the panel 2 thereby clamping the name carrying part of the packet between the panels and the unwanted parts of the packet projecting from between the panels 1, 2 are torn away which is assisted by the lips 7 and 7a of panel 1 being formed with serrations 7b.
Thus a rigid, weatherproof name carrying plant label is provided which can be reused and where a seed packet is not to serve as the name carrier, a piece of paper can be used on which the name is written.
While the leg has been described as normal to the axis of hinge 3, the leg may extend in any desired direction from the panel 1, such as parallel with the hinge axis.
Instead of providing a serrated edge to the lip of panel 1 it may be preferred to provide outwardly extending serrations on the edge of panel 2 over that part of panel 2 where it will be overlapped by panel 1.
1. A plant label peg comprising a first and a second body panel, the panels being connected by hinge means integral with each of them, a transparent portion in at least one body panel, locking means by which the body panels are secured in folded condition face-to-face and a leg portion integral with one body panel for insertion in the ground, the peg being foldable to receive between the panels a label, preferably being a printed portion of a seed packet, which is visible through the transparent portion.
2. A plant label peg as claimed in Claim 1, in which the locking means comprise a stud on the face of one panel which will make snap engagement and disengagement with an aperture in the other panel.
3. A plant label peg as claimed in either of the preceding claims in which an edge portion of one panel is formed to assist in rupturing a label element, a portion of which projects from between the panels.
4. A plant label peg substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
