Pulp, preparation of.-In a process for obtain. ing cellulosic material suitable for the production of cardboard, paper from peat, also applicable for the treatment of plant fibres, sawdust, straw, jute, maize, or artichoke fibres, esparto, or other like materials, milk of lime is used together with a soluble sulphate, sulphite or carbonate, or other substance reactive with the lime to form caustic alkali, the materials being treated in open boilers or under pressure. Peat so treated, and by subsequent bleaching, is stated to yield pulp suitable for cardboard, coarse paper, or, printing paper, according to the severity of the boiling operation.
