Abstract

Friction clutches comprise an inner pair of members c, c' which form together a cylinder and piston adapted to be thrust apart by pressure fluid so as to engage a pair of outer rigid clutch members d, d<1>. There are annular chambers w, w<1> of smaller area constantly supplied with pressure fluid while the clutch is in engagement through channels g, f. Directly the preesure fluid to the main clutch chamber is cut off, the chambers w, w' expand, disengaging the clutch. As applied to variable-speed gearing, control of the clutches is effected by a rotatable valve. Specification 208,278 is referred to.
