474,539. Operating clutches. WICHTENDAHL, R. Aug. 24, 1936, No. 23246. Convention date, Aug. 31, 1935. [Class 80 (ii)] The piston valve 5 controlling an hydraulically-actuated friction clutch for a motor vehicle is connected with the accelerator in such a way that, on release of the latter, the valve occupies the position shown, in which a conduit 3 leading from an engine-driven oil pump 1 communicates with an air vessel 11 through three passages 8, 9 and 10 of successively-larger cross-sectional areas, while a conduit 12 leading to the pressure chamber 13 of the clutch communicates with a drain conduit 20. On depressing the accelerator, the passage 10 is cut off from communication with the conduit 3 and is placed in communication with the conduit 12, and the conduit 20 is closed, while the passages 8 and 9 still provide communication between the pump and the vessel 11. The clutch therefore engages. On excessive depression of the accelerator, however, the passage 9 is closed so as to restrict the supply to the vessel 11 and prevent the clutch from engaging too rapidly. The clutch may be constructed as described in Specification 451,814.
