Abstract
207,058. Royce, F. H., and Rolls- Royce, Ltd. Dec. 15, 1922. Switches, quick-action; switches, locking and unlocking; switchboards.-In a motor-car control switch two rotary switch members are mounted side-by-side in a casing, the members being provided with locating and locking mechanisms and also switch means for earthing the magnets. In the casing a with cover a<1> is fixed the insulating base a<2> on which are mounted two rotary switch members each having a square hub b on which is secured an insulated segmental contact plate b' which is adapted to bridge pairs of fixed jaw contacts c, d in the various switching positions, the contacts c, d' being secured to metal contact plates c<1> mounted on segmental projections a<3> of the base a<2>. The contact plates c<1> are connected by screws c<2> passing through the base a<2> to rear terminals c<3>, and the contacts d are mounted on but insulated from the plate c<1> being connected by similar screws d<1> to rear terminals d<2>, d<3>. The hubs b project at b<9> through bearings a<6> in the front of the cover a<1>, operating handles b<11> secured by screws b<13> on the projecting ends. One of the hubs b rotates on a fixed pin a<4> projecting from the plate a<2> the other hub being formed with a collar b<1> and a rounded portion a<44> which rotates in a metal sleeve a<5> lining a hole in the plate a<2>. A contact piece h is secured to the end of the hub extension a<44> and is arranged to bridge fixed contacts h<1>, h<2> mounted on the. rear of the plate a<2> when the ignition is cut off, so connecting the magnets to earth. For locating the switch members in their various positions two arms c are provided on a connection pivot e<1>, their free ends carrying rollers e<4> which rest in peripheral notches in discs b<2> secured on the hubs b. The levers e have projections e<2>, e<3> for locating and holding a C-shaped spring e<6> which presses the levers against the discs b<2>. For locking the switches a sliding locking plate f is provided with projections f sliding in grooves in the base a<2>, being retained therein by metal straps f<5>. The plate f has a slot f<7> which is engaged by an eccentric pin g on the cylinder of a Yale lock, the operating of which moves the projections f<3> on the locking plate f into slots f<2> in the disc b<2>. Projections b<13> by abutting against the locking projections f<3> limit the rotation of the switch members.
