Description

SPECIFICATION Installation for the treatment of a rope of fibres intended for the production of cigarette filters The present invention relates to an installation for treating a rope of fibres unwound from a bale and intended for the production of cigarette filters, comprising means for the entrainment of the rope, a raised deflector ensuring the unfolding of the rope drawn from the bale, a pair of pre-drawing rollers, one of which is driven by a motor and at least one pair of opening-out rollers driven by a motor.
An installation of this type is described in Swiss Patent 469 449. In this installation, the rope leaving the deflector passes in succession between a pair of pre-drawing rollers and between two pairs of opening-out rollers, then it passes in front of a blower, also referred to as an aerodynamic spreader, the aim of which is to separate the fibres from each other. The rope unwound from the bale frequently comprises longitudinal folds which the opening-out rollers are intended to loosen. However, these folds are frequently not loosened since the tension on the rope is too high between the deflector and the opening-out rollers. The pre-drawing effect ensured by the pre-drawing rollers is not sufficient to loosen these folds. The folds which exist are thus crushed instead of being spread out, thus creating areas of excess thickness preventing good opening-out of the rope between the opening-out rollers. This unfavourable effect increases with acetate ropes having a low denier per filament.
This drawback is also encountered in the installation according to French Patent No.
1 459 679, in which the folds are crushed before the rope passes in front of a blower.
The object of the present invention is to loosen these folds before they are crushed.
According to the present invention there is provided an installation for the treatment of a rope of fibres unwound from a bale and intended for the production of cigarette filters, comprising means for the entrainment of the rope, a raised deflector ensuring unfolding of the rope withdrawn from the bale, a pair of pre-drawing rollers, one of which is driven by a motor, and at least one pair of opening-out rollers driven by a motor, wherein immediately downstream of the pre-drawing rollers is a blower followed by a pair of passive spreading rollers and the motor for the predrawing rollers is governed, as regards speed, by the first opening-out rollers.
The addition of a pair of passive spreading rollers downstream of the pre-drawing rollers creates an area of reduced tension which promotes the action of a blower, i.e. the spreading-out of the rope, between these two pairs of rollers. Changing the control ratio of the pre-drawing rollers, i.e. the ratio of the speeds, makes it possible to modify the tension and consequently the spreading width of the rope in a very controlled manner.
This spreading-out may also be controlled by the pressure of the passive spreading rollers. In fact, changing the pressure of these rollers, one of which consists of rubber and the other of steel, makes it possible to modify the deceleration of the rope at this point and also consequently to vary the tension on the rope in the area of the blower. It will be noted that by modifying either the control ratio, or the pressure of the spreading rollers, the width of the rope in the spreading area is modified instantaneously and very precisely.
The accompanying drawing shows one embodiment of the invention by way of example.
The single figure of the drawing is a diagrammatic view, in elevation, of an installation for the treatment of a rope of cellulose acetate fibres.
The installation comprises a deflector 1, constituted by a metal sheet with bent ends, fixed to the end of an arm 2, the so called blowersupport arm, since it also supports a first blower 3 ensuring a first opening of the rope of cellulose acetate fibres 4 unwound from a bale 5. The first deflector 1 is located at a certain height above the bale 5 in order to enable the transverse folds in the rope to open out under the effect of the weight of the rope itself.
The installation then comprises a pair of predrawing rollers 6/7. The roller 6 has a rubber surface and it is driven by an electric servo-motor 8 whereas the roller 7 is a pressure roller consisting of steel, the shaft of which is integral with a pneumatic jack 9 whereof the pressure can be adjusted by means of a valve 10 and a pressure gauge 22.
The rope 4 then passes in front of a blower 11, known per se, then between a pair of spreading rollers 12/13 whereof the roller 12 consists of rubber and the roller 1 3 of steel, the shaft of the roller 13 being integral with a pneumatic jack 14 whereof the pressure can be adjusted by means of a valve 15 and a pressure gauge 23.
The rope then passes between a first pair of opening-out rollers 16/17, whereof the roller 1 6 is a pressure roller which has a rubber surface, whereas the steel roller 1 7 is driven by a motor, then between a second pair of opening-out rollers identical to the pair 16/17, in order to pass through a plasticizing booth 20 through which it is guided and drawn by a pair of rollers 21.
The servo-motor 8 is governed, as regards speed, by the roller 1 7 of the first pair of openingout rollers.
By exerting a pre-drawing effect on the rope 4, the rollers 6/7 reduce the tension on the rope in the area of the blower 11, thus allowing the rope to spread out more freely and allowing the longitudinal folds to drop out.
The spreading rollers 12/13 exert not only pressure on the rope, whereof the fibres are separated from each other by the blower, but also retard this rope, thus contributing to reducing the tension exerted on the rope in the area of the blower 1 there are thus two possibilities of adjusting the tension in the area of the blower and by means of these two parameters, which are easy to control, it is possible to obtain exactly optimum spreading of the rope.
