Ball bearings of the cap-and-cone type for bicycles and the like comprise a slidably mounted ball race loosely coupled to a screwed adjusting member and locking means for the adjusting member. As shown in Fig. 1, a cone 3 engages with an adjusting member 4 screwed on the spindle 7, the member 4 being locked in adjusted position by a spurred washer 14 and lock-nut 15. In a modification, Fig. 2, the bearing cup 5 is fitted slidably in the hub and is adjusted axially by a nut 6 which has two holes with compression springs 18 and balls 19. The cup 5 has a ring of recesses which register with the balls 19 to prevent unintentional rotation of the nut 6 and serve to determine the amount of adjustment. The race 5 is prevented from rotating by a key 16. The balls 19 and springs 18 may be dispensed with and the member 6 mav be locked by a nut 22 and washer 14 shown in Fig. 7. The locking means shown in Fig. 2 mav be applied to the adjustable cone bearing shown in Fig. 1.
