Description

SPECIFICATION Apparatus for Supplying Metal Sheets To and Removing Them from Cutting and/or Stamping Machines This invention relates to apparatus for supplying sheet metal to and removing metal sheets from a cutting and/or stamping machine, comprising drivable belt conveyors disposed in front of and behind the cutting and/or stamping tool of the said machine for horizontal transport of the metal sheets, and a magnetic retaining device consisting of an electromagnetic system or electromagnetically connectable permanent magnet systems in the region of the cutting and/or stamping tool.
The practice of transporting metal sheets of magnetisable material with, instead of hooks or suction cups, electromagnet or permanent magnet systems in suspension to the desired delivery or working point is generally known. The magnet systems are disposed above the conveyor belt and cause the metal sheet on the conveyor belt to be retained by the magnetic forces penetrating through the belt and the metal sheet, e.g. as described in German Auslegeschrift 23 46 042.
A problem with such devices is that metal sheets to be cut are unrolled from the coil and pushed through the cutter with a roller feed mechanism. During cutting, the metal sheet in the tool must be stopped i.e. the feed apparatus must be stopped. After cutting, the cut-off metal sheets must be transported away so quickly that the following insertion speed is not greater, otherwise overlapping of the sheets would occur. The speed graph of such a roller feed mechanism either follows a sinusoidal curve or exhibits a trapezoidal trend with an acceleration section, a constantspeed section and a braking section. This speed trend would have to be duplicated exactly by the belt conveyor which takes over the sheets in suspension behind the cutter. With the usually high speeds of today, such high acceleration and braking values are concerned here that they can no longer be duplicated with a conventional belt conveyor. The inertia forces, the elasticity of the belts, etc. are so great that synchronous running between roller feed mechanism and subsequent belt conveyor practically cannot be guaranteed.
For this reason, hitherto so-called hold-up strips have been used, on which the sheet metal is displaced only by friction. These hold-up strips between the discharge conveyors must be capable of being moved up and down mechanically, which leads to friction and the development of surface damage on the metal sheets as well as considerable generation of noise. For such reasons, both known belt conveyors and apron conveyors do not fulfil the requirement of guiding metal sheets with maximum possible speed and expeditious handling to and from cutting and stamping machines.
The invention is directed to apparatus by which both careful and rapid supply of metal sheets to and removal from cutting and/or stamping machines is rendered possible.
To achieve this object, apparatus of the kind mentioned hereinbefore, it is characterised in that according to the invention in a frame or the like are inserted magnet systems for suspension-type transport and retaining of the sheet metal during the cutting and/or stamping process and, between these, rollers which are freely rotatable about an axis lying transversely to the direction of transport of the metal sheets and which protrude beyond the holding surface of the magnet systems by a small amount, and below the magnetic retaining device at a distance therefrom is disposed the discharge conveyor belt.
The operation of the apparatus according to the invention is as follows: By means of conventional belt conveyors, the sheet metal to be cut and/or stamped is supplied horizontally to the cutting and/or stamping machine, and the formed sheets are taken over behind the cutting and/or stamping tool by the magnetic retaining device according to the invention. The metal sheets run along the freely rotatable rollers without damage, and being attracted towards the rollers by the switched-on magnets. When the incoming sheet metal has reached the correct position in the machine, the supply conveyor belt is stopped, and the cutting and/or stamping process is carried out. After completion of the cutting and/or stamping process, the holding force of the magnets is switched off, whereby the cut and/or stamped metal sheet drops from the magnetic retaining device onto the discharge conveyor belt located at a distance therebeneath. This discharge conveyor belt 8 can be driven permanently at constant speed, and therefore does not need to be adapted to the cycle of the cutting and/or stamping machine.
After the cut and/or stamped metal sheet has dropped onto the discharge conveyor belt, the next sheet to be worked can be inserted in the machine without obstruction by the previously worked sheet. Due to the fact that the rollers in the magnetic retaining device are not driven, the supply conveyor belt can be run at variable speed.
Adaptation of speed of operation of the magnetic retaining device to that of the supply conveyor belt is therefore not necessary. Supply of the sheets to the machine can therefore take place with maximum acceleration and speed.
By an electronic control circuit, control of supply and discharge as well as of the cutting and/or stamping process can be controlled optimally, so that a high throughput of sheets through the machine is rendered possible.
One embodiment of the invention is hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
The sheet metal 1 is conveyed in the direction of supply indicated by the arrow 2 on supply conveyor belt 3, to the cutting and/or stamping machine 4 and is taken over behind the cutting and /or stamping tool 5 by the magnetic retaining device 6.
The magnetic retaining device 6 consists of switchable magnet system 8 carried in holding means consisting of a frame 7 or the like, and freely rotatable rollers 9 below which the worked metal sheet 1 advances, being held thereto in suspension by magnetic forces generated by the switched-on magnet systems 8.
After reaching the predetermined working position of the sheet metal 1 in the cutting and/or stamping machine 4, the supply conveyor belt 3 is stopped and the cutting and/or stamping process carried out. After completion thereof, the holding force of the magnet systems 8 in the magnetic retaining device 6 is switched off, whereby the cut metal sheet 1 loses its hold and drops onto the discharge conveyor belt 10 disposed below the magnetic retaining device 6, and can be transported away by the removal conveyor 10.
After the cut and/or stamped metal sheet 1 has dropped down from the magnetic retaining device 6, the supply conveyor belt 3 can start again and the next sheet 1 be conveyed into the cutting and/or stamping machine 4 without obstruction by the previously worked sheet which has been conveyed away.
A detailed description of the electromagnet systems or electrically connectable permanent magnet systems which come into consideration is not necessary, various designs being commercially available.
The rollers 9 are preferably made of plastics material, to obviate surface damage to the metal sheets.
