Abstract

205,543. Rose, J. R., and Harris, J. July 12, 1922. Gaseous mixtures; carburetting.-A gaseous fuel for the cutting or welding of metals with oxygen comprises a mixture of hydrogen with from 1 to 50 per cent. by volume of a hydrocarbon or hydrocarbon derivative with entire absence of oxides of carbon. Examples of hydrocarbons are butane, propane, methane, natural gas, gasoline alcohol, hydrocarbons from distillation of vegetable and animal oils and fats, acetylene, or hydrocarbons of the benzene series. With liquid hydrocarbons the mixture is made by saturating the hydrogen with their vapours, employing a saturator or carburettor. A mixture of 1 to 5 per cent. of hydrocarbons is used for cutting light metals and for narrow clean cuts, 5 to 15 per cent for medium and heavy masses, and 15 to 50 per cent for the heaviest masses of metal including cast iron.
