Abstract
Vat-dyestuffs are obtained by condensing benzanthrone, or a substitution product thereof having a free 11-position, with an aromatic acid chloride in presence of a catalytic or condensing agent. The products dye cotton in yellow to deep orange shades from red to bluish-red hydrosulphite vats; that obtained by condensing benzanthrone with benzoyl chloride in presence of aluminium chloride, with or without some zinc chloride, is probably 3 : 4 : 8 : 9-dibenzopyrene-5 : 10-quinone. Examples are given of the preparation of dyestuffs from benzanthrone and benzoyl chloride or p-toluic chloride. Other benzanthrone compounds which may be used are a -oxybenzanthrone and benzanthrone quinoline, other acid chlorides are toluic acid chloride, chlorbenzoyl chloride, and nitrobenzoyl chloride.
