Abstract

A cycle and auto-cycle wheel rim has surfaces 10, 10' and 12 adapted for gluing a tubular tyre B, and housings 16, 16' to receive the beads T of a standard tyre. The rim may be made of a reinforced plastics material or a light alloy. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A re & es8 wheel rn Boor cpy&commat;ges atl auW- cycles The present invention relates to a cycle and auto-cycle wheel rim, and its object is par2icu- larly an original profile for such a wheel rim.
Currently, most cycles are provided with standard tyres with beads. Yet, the recent development of less fragile, easy to repair tubular tyres, tends to make the use of this type of tyre, outside competition circles, more general. But it is known that tubular tyres are glued onto special rims which cannot, of course, be used for mounting standard tyres.
This requirement tends therefore to restrict the development of the tubular type of tyre since the user has to buy a new set of wheel rims when passing from the standard tyre with beads to the tubular tyre. The object of the present invention is to solve this problem by providing a new type of wheel rim designed as such so to be equally capable of receiving both standard bead tyres and tubular tyres.
The invention thus provides a cycle and auto-cycle wheel rim, characterised in that ii: comprises on the one hand surfaces adapted for gluing a tubular tyre, and on the other hand housings adapted for receiving the beads of a standard tyre.
Preferably, the length, measured on the cross-section of the rim profile, of the porions intended for gluing the tubular tyre is at least about 1 cm.
The housings adapted to receive the beads of a standard tyre suitably comprise inner housing portions adapted provisionally to receive said beads when positioning the tyre, and peripheral housing portions in which the beads are finally fitted.
The wheel rim according to the invention may be made of any desired material. Prefera- bly, it is made either in reinforced plastics materials, or in a light alloy.
Further characteristics and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description of an embodiment thereof, reference being made to the accompanying drawing the single figure of which is a sectional view at a large scale of a wheel rim profile according to the invention.
Reference being made to the drawing, one sees that the wheel rim profile according to the invention comprises surfaces (three in number in this embodiment) 10, 10' and 1 2 adapted for gluing a tubular tyre B shown schematically in chain-dot line. The Applicant has found whatever the size of the tubular tyre placed on the rim, that the length, measured on the cross-section of the profile, or portions 10, 10' and 1 2 intended for gluing the tyre, should preferably be at least about 1 cm (1 + 1 ' + 1 " = 1 cm).
Said rim comprises on the other hand housings adapted for receiving the beads of a standard tyre. On the drawing is shown schematically at T and in dashed line the beads of a standard tyre.
Said housings comprise portions of two kinds: 1-inner housing portions 18, 18' intended for provisionally receiving the beads when posiLioning the tyre on the rim, and 2-peripheral housing portions 1 6, 1 6' in which the beads are fitted during the final positioning of the tyre.
It should be remarked that the wheel rim described comprises in its centre a relative massive portion 1 4 which can be punched for placing the heads of the wheel spokes. The cost price is thereby reduced relative to standard rims where one has to punch the rim and to foresee eyelets of a complex shape for placing the spoke.
From the hereabove description, one sees that the invention provides a wheel rim profile of economical manufacture, capable of receiving with equal facility either tubular tyres, and particularly the new type of tyres currently developed, less fragile and easy to repair, and standard tyres with beads.
The wheel rim according to the invention may be manufactured from any desired material. One can realize it in reinforced plastics materials or in a light alloy. In the latter case, one can obtain the required profile by extrusion and the rim is made thereafter by bending and butt welding.
It is emphasized that the present invention is not limited to the embodiment set forth in the description and drawing and that it covers all possible modifications within the scope of
