Abstract

A cycle wheel rim comprises housings 12, 12' designed to receive the beads T of a standard tire, and a pair of surfaces 10, 10' to which a tubular tire B can be glued. The rim may be of reinforced plastics, or, as shown, may be made from a light alloy extrusion cut to length and joined at its ends by a member 16. The dimension L + L' may be about 10 mm. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A wheel rim profile for cycles and auto-cycles The present invention relates to a cycle and autocycle wheel rim of the type disclosed in the British patent No. 2 051 700, that is designed so as to receive indifferently standard beaded edge tires and tubular tires.
More particularly, its object is a wheel rim according to said prior British patent, comprising, on the one hand, surfaces for gluing a tubular tire, and, on the other hand, housings adapted for receiving the tire beads of a standard tire, said wheel rim being characterized in that it comprises two peripheral surfaces for gluing thetubulartire.
Other features and advantages of the present invention will become more apparent from the hereafter description, with reference to the accompanying drawing, the single figure of which shows, at a large scale and in a sectional view, a wheel rim profile according to the present invention.
It is clear from said figure that the wheel rim profile according to the present invention comprises two peripheral surfaces 10,10' for gluing a tubular tire B, shown schematically in chain-dot line. As in the prior patent, the sum of the lengths measured on the cross-section of the profile of portions 10, 10' provided for gluing the tubular tire is equal to 1 cm about (e + C' = 1 cm).
This value is critical for the following reasons. The Applicant has found that a compromise had to be reached between the wheel rim surface provided for gluing the tubular tire and the maximum surface of said wheel rim on which can bear the flanks of a standard tire when the wheel rim receives a beaded edge tire. Below a value of 10 mm, the Applicant has established that the tubular tire gluing surface was insufficient. For values exceeding 10 mm, it has been established that the bearing surface for the flanks of a standard tire mounted on said wheel rim is too large. This results into a tearing away of the tire flanks in the positions where said flanks come to bear against the wheel rim profile portion provided for gluing thetubulartire.
In addition, the wheel rim comprises housings 12, 12' for receiving the beads T (shown schematically in the Figure in dashed lines) of a standard tire. The positioning of said beads is made easy by the presence of a clearance 14 separating housings 12, 12'.
As in the prior patent, said wheel rim can be manufactured from any desired material, for example a reinforced plastics material or a light alloy. The embodiment shown in the Figure relates to a light alloy wheel rim obtained from an extruded profile, cut to length, then centered, and finally joined via a splice-piece 16, in known manner.
Obviously, the present invention is not limited to the embodiment described and shown, and it encompasses all its modifications.
1. A cycle and auto-cycle wheel rim comprising, on the one hand, surfaces provided for gluing a tubular tire, and, on the other hand, housings designed so as to receive the beads of a standard tire, said wheel rim being characterized in that it comprises two peripheral surfaces for gluing the tubular tire.
2. A wheel rim according to claim 1, characterized in that it is made of a light alloy, by extruding the profile, followed by cutting it to the required length, then centering it, and finally joining both ends by using a splice-piece.
3. Awheel rim according to claim 1, wherein said rim is made of reinforced plastics materials.
4. A wheel rim according to claim 1, wherein the sum ofthe lengths measured on the cross-section of the profile of portions provided for gluing the tubular tire is of about 10 mm.
5. A cycle and auto-cycle rim substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
