Abstract

A method of manufacturing a gulley or yard trap by casting the trap, preferably in two parts, in concrete and allowing the concrete to cure by applying a smooth surface coating of pigmented mortar. To complete curing, after the surface coating has been applied, the trap is submerged in cold water for an extended period which may be a week or more.

Description

SPECIFICATION Gulley or Yard Traps This invention relates to gulley or yard traps and more particularly to a method of making such a trap.
One object of this invention is to enable the manufacture of gulley or yard traps by methods and using apparatus less complicated and expensive than those commonly used for conventional manufacture in the United Kingdom.
Accordingly, we propose a method of manufacturing a gulley or yard trap, which comprises casting the trap in concrete and allowing the concrete to cure before applying a smooth surface coating of pigmented mortar or the like. The invention also includes a gulley trap manufactured by this method.
One embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example.
Concrete having the composition set out below, was mixed and poured into wooden moulds: i parts portland cement, 1 parts river sand, 2 parts stone chippings (21ll diam.), WI kilogram/kilogram of mixture Terra Cotta colour crate cement.
The trap is cast in two parts which are removed from the mould after 24 hours and submerged in water for a further 24 hours. The parts at the trap are then removed to the work bench where the surfaces of the parts to be joined are roughened with Noritake round machine flat paper of 7" diameter (A 24). The surfaces are then washed, dried with a sponge and cemented together.
Next a coating of cement mixed with a little of the colour crate, is applied inside and out, to give a uniform smooth finish and the trap is then submerged for onl3 week or more in cold water to complete curing.
One gulley tra, produced by the method of the invention is showlt in the accompanying drawings. The size of a typical trap is: External 438 mm length 348 mm height 214 mm x 214 mm (upper surface) 150 mmx213 mm base Internal 100 mm 100 mm 150 mm x mm
Claims 1. A method of manufacturing a gulley or yard trap, which comprises casting the trap in concrete and allowing the concrete to cure before applying a smooth surface coating of pigmented mortar or the like.
2. A method according to claim 1 wherein the cast concrete is removed from the mould and allowed to cure in air for a first period of time and subsequently submerged in water-for a second period of time.
3. A method according to claim 2 wherein the first and the second period of time are each 24 hours.
4. A method according to any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein the trap is cast in two parts which are joined together after the cast concrete has been cured.
5. A method according to claim 1 wherein the mating surfaces of the parts to be joined are roughened, washed and dried, the parts then being cemented together.
6. A method according to any one of claims 1 to 5 wherein after the application of the smooth surface coating the trap is submerged in cold water for an extended period.
7. A method according to any one of claims 1 to 6 wherein the trap is cast in a concrete having the following composition: - parts portland cement, 121 parts river sand, 2 parts stone chippings q" diam.), + kilogram/kilogram of mixture Terra Cotta colour crate cement.
8. A method according to claim 7 wherein the surface coating comprises cement to which colour crate is added.
9. A method of manufacturing a gulley or yard trap substantially as hereinbefore described by way of example. .
10. A gulley or yard trap when rhanufactured by the method according to any one of claims 1 to 9.
