Abstract
A threshold unit for location in the floor of a doorway opening, especially for the purpose of guiding and sealing a sliding door for covering the wall opening, consisting of two longitudinal elements (7,8) of whose ends are adapted to be secured to the posts of a door frame. Each of the longitudinal elements is connected to an opposite side of an intermediate beam (6) by means of breakable connections (9,10). The longitudinal elements are designed so as to be mounted at the same height as the floor surface being provided with recessed parts in which a cover plate (13) is provided. The cover plate is secured only to the intermediate beam, and the ends of the intermediate beam are secured to the posts of the door frame. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Threshold unit
The present invention relates to a threshold unit for location in the floor of a doorway opening, especially for the purpose of guiding and sealing a sliding door or covering the opening, comprising two longitudinal elements of profiled cross section which are to be secured at their ends to the posts of a door frame which is to frame the door opening.
Usually such a threshold unit is secured, together with the door frame, to the doorway opening in the correct position with respect to this opening, the upper surface of the threshold being preferably at the same height as the floor, whereafter the floor is installed.
To this end, it is necessary that the threshold unit with door frame and door is mounted aleady in the basic building stage of the opening to be closed, so that this assembly is bound with regard to the time at which it must be located in the opening, and damage may occur during the finishing.
In the case in which the floor is provided first, the threshold is sunk into a recess left in the floor, whereafter the remaining space in the recess has to be filled up with floor material.
In both cases, moreover, a drawback occurs, especially when the floor consists of a cast concrete layer and the doorway opening is meant as access to a room in which, after it has been put into use, the temperature is considerably lower than occurring during its construction-e.g. in a cooling or freezing room-in that when the floor shrinks it is detached from the threshold, so that one or more gaps occur in which moisture and dirt may accumulate and the exposed concrete edge may become damaged.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a threshold construction which does not have said drawbacks.
According to the present invention there is provided a threshold unit for location in the floor of a doorway opening, comprising two longitudinal elements of profiled cross-section having ends for securing to posts of a door frame which is to frame the opening, the two longitudinal elements being provided for connection to an intermediate beam at both sides thereof by means of breakable connections, the longitudinal elements which are designed to be mounted at the same height as the floor surface having recessed parts in which a cover plate is received, the coverplate being adapted to be secured only to the intermediate beam, and the ends of the intermediate beam being adapted to be secured to the posts of the door frame.
By this means, when the floor shinks, the longitudinal elements remain connected therewith, so that no gap between the floor and the threshold can occur.
In a preferred embodiment of a threshold unit, f according to the invention, the interme- dicxe beam is secured to construction ele meri'L# which temporarily replace the posts of thQ door frame.
Thus, this threshold unit can be previously installed and cast in a floor.
The invention will now be further described with reference to an exemplary embodiment of the invention which is as shown in the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a horizontal section taken through a doorway opening, in which an embodiment of a threshold construction according to the invention is shown;
Figure 2 represents a cross section along the line Il-Il in Fig. 1.
In the figures reference numerals 1 and 2 refer to parts of a wall, in which a doorway opening 3 has been left, through which a first room having a floor 4 is connected with a second room having a floor 5.
Between the floors 4 and 5 there is an intermediate beam 6, on both sides of which longitudinal elements of profiled cross section 7 and 8 are secured by means of screws 9 and 10.
The upper flanges of elements 7,8 are located at the same height as the floor surface and are provided with recessed parts 11 and 12, in which rests a cover strip 13, which is secured to the intermediate beam 6 by means of bolts 14.
The intermediate beam 6 is connected by means of one or more fill-in pieces 15,16 to construction parts 17 and 18 which temporarily replace the posts of the door frame.
To reinforce the connections between the floor part 4 and the element 7, as well as between the floor part 5 and the element 8, anchoring bolts 19 and 20 can be used.
If the doorway opening 3 must be closed by a sliding door, provisions for guiding the door can be provided on the cover plate 13.
When the sliding door is required to close a cooling or freezing room, the intermediate beam 6 can be provided with recesses for a heating cable.
If one or both of the floor parts 4,5 should shrink after assembly of the threshold construction, the elements 7 and 8 will move with the floor parts and be drawn away from each other, the connecting screws 9 and 10 being designed in such a way that they w '4 break off.
It is true that a gap will thereby result between the intermediate beam 6 and one or both profiles 7 and 8, but this gap remains covered by the cover plate 13, which for this purpose slides in the recesses 11 and 12.
The threshold unit according to Figs. 1 and 2 can be installed at the same time as the floor parts, whereas the fill-in pieces 15 and 16 with the parts 17 and 18 can be removed thereafter and the final posts of the door frame can be installed later.
Claims (6)
