Abstract

A board is marked with a test route made up of positions, some of which are numbered. A pack of cards is provided, each card having a number corresponding to a number on the board and carrying a question based on driving hazards shown on the board. The back of each card bears a traffic sign. Pieces are moved along the route using a die and the appropriate questions answered. Tokens are provided for award on answering a question correctly. Another pack of cards is provided carrying more general questions on motoring and a certain number of these must be answered before movement on the board is commenced. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Board game The invention is concerned with providing a board game, which is of educational value in assisting motorists and, more particularly, those learning to drive a motor vehicle, to learn to use the roads correctly.
This invention relates to apparatus for playing a board game of the type comprising a board having a playing surface marked with positions and a piece movable on the board from position to position.
The present invention provides apparatus for playing a game comprising a board having a playing surface marked so as to represent in plan a town road system and having marked thereon an area representing a motor vehicle driving test centre and positions marking a route on the road system, at least one playing piece representing a vehicle and movable from position to position, and means provided with questions and answers relating to driving hazards marked on the road system, at least some of said positions being marked with an identifying symbol corresponding to respective questions.
For educational use, the piece may be moved along the route, stopping on every position corresponding to a question, all of the corresponding questions being answered. It is envisaged that for playing a game more than one piece may be provided for selecting a number randomly, the piece being moved the number of positions registered by the selecting means.
A single route may be indicated by the positions, or different routes may be possible and means provided for selecting a route.
The means providing the questions may be a pack of cards each card carrying one of the identifying symbols on a corresponding position on the board. Answers may be provided on a separate sheet.
A separate set of cards may be provided also carrying questions and these may be taken randomly in turn by the players e.g. it may be a requirement to answer a given number of these questions before the player can move his piece on the board. Points may be awarded for correct answers and tokens may be provided to represent points scored.
Reference is now made to the accompanying drawing wherein the sole figure shows the playing surface of a board.
The playing surface is marked with a town road system including a building marked L and representing a motor vehicle driving test centre. The road system includes such features as roundabouts 51, traffic lights 52, zebra crossings 53 and a box junction 54.
The roads are divided into positions, marked by the circular blobs 55 and by numbers from 1 to 25. Arrows 56 show the route to be taken. Hazards such as parked and moving vehicles 57 may also be provided and it is envisaged that parked vehicles may be differently coloured on the board from moving vehicles.
Playing pieces comprise a plurality of motor-car shaped pieces (not shown) proportioned according to the road system and a die is also provided.
There are also provided a set of random question cards, a set of hazard question cards and a booklet of answers.
Each hazard question card is numbered so as to correspond with a particular numbered position on the board. Each random question card is numbered to ease identification to locate the correct answer.
The questions on the hazard question cards relate to specific positions on the board. For example, a question corresponding to a position adjacent a set of traffic lights may relate to observance of traffic-light signals. The questions on the random question cards are general questions such as questions on what to do in the event of a skid or in fog. All of the questions and answers are based on the Highway Code.
It is envisaged that the question cards may be provided on the reverse side with representations of traffic signs for familiarising players with the signs.
Tokens (not shown) are also provided for award when a correct answer is made.
The rules of the game is as follows:- 1. To determine who starts a game, the die is thrown in turn by the players.
2. The players, in turn, answer questions at random from the random-questions cards. If a correct answer is given, the card is retained by the player giving the answer. After six cards have been collected by a player, the player selects a playing piece, which he places on the test-centre position L on the board.
3. Thereafter, for his turn, the player who has selected a playing piece, throws the die and moves the piece on the board along the marked route by a number of positions according to the number shown on the die.
4. If the piece rests on a position marked with a number, the question on the hazard-question card carrying that number, must be answered. If a correct answer is given, a token is collected.
5. At the end of the route, a player will have "passed" his driving test, if the number of hazard questions answered correctly is at least five times the number not answered correctly.
1. Apparatus for playing a game comprising a board having a playing surface marked so as to rep- resent in plan a town road system and having marked thereon an area representing a motorvehicle driving test centre and positions marking a route on the road system, at least one playing piece representing a vehicle and movable from position to position, and means provided with questions and answers relating to driving hazards marked on the road system, at least some of said positions being marked with an identifying symbol corresponding to respective questions.
2. Apparatus according to Claim 1, comprising a plurality of playing pieces each representing a vehicle, and means for selecting a number randomly.
3. Apparatus according to Claim 2, wherein the means for selecting a number randomly is a die.
4. Apparatus according to any preceding Claim, wherein said identifying symbol is a number.
5. Apparatus according to any preceding Claim, including tokens.
