Abstract

The apparatus comprises a game board 1 (half of which is shown) with a reticulated surface having areas 2 of a first type, each area representing a supermarket or shop shelf having particular goods thereupon and having a colour-coded value 2a,b,c representing the points value of the goods, and areas 3 of a second type which represent passageways past the shelves; two sets of instruction cards on which a particular word may be highlighted; playing tokens; and a chance device for determining movement of the tokens. A player moves across the areas 3 according to the throw of the chance device, e.g. a die, and may purchase an item from a shelf 2 adjacent the square 3 landed upon, the player accruing the points value of goods purchased. "Final" and "calamity" cards having instructions to a player, and representing advantages or disadvantages of a type encountered in a shop, are selected by a player when landing on a designated area 8. The game ends when a player leaves the shop and the player having the highest number of points wins the game. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Board game apparatus The present invention relates to board game apparatus. More particularly, the invention relates to a board game apparatus in which players move around a supermarket purchasing goods. A player scores points for each item purchased. The game ends when a player exits from the supermarket and the player with the highest number of points is the winner.
The present invention provides a board game apparatus comprising a board divided into a plurality of areas of first and second type to represent a shop or supermarket, the first type representing shelves or the like of a shop or supermarket containing goods available for purchase and the second type defining passageways past the shelves.
Very preferably the areas of the second type also define at least one shop entrance zone and one shop exit zone.
Preferably there is provided a set of tokens, each token for representing the progress of a player around the board, and a chance device for determining the degree of movement of a token. Preferably the chance device comprises a dice to be thrown by a player.
Preferably there is provided one or more sets of cards containing cards effecting advantages or disadvantages for a player receiving one or more of such cards, a said card to be drawn by the player as determined by chance.
Preferably there is provided a first set of cards, calamity cards, representing advantages or disadvantages of a type which may be encountered when collecting goods for purchase. Preferably said areas of a second type include areas instructing a player landed thereupon to draw a said calamity card.
Preferably there is provided a second set of cards, final calamity cards, representing advantages or disadvantages of a type which may be encountered when leaving a shop or supermarket. Preferably said areas of a second type include areas instructing a player landed thereupon to draw a said final calamity card.
Preferably a said card has written instructions thereupon having a word thereof highlighted.
Preferably at least some of said areas of a second type are formed in adjacent parallely rows to allow a player to move sideways as well as backwards or forwards between facing areas of a first type.
Preferably each said area of a first type has one of a range of values.
The invention will be further described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a game board according to the invention; Figure 2 shows a shopping card for use with the invention; Figure 3 shows a first type of chance card for use with the invention; Figure 4 shows a second type of chance card for use with the invention; Game board 1 has a reticulated surface having areas 2 of a first type which represent supermarket shelves, and areas 3 of a second type which represent passageways past the shelves. Each area 2 is labelled with the name of a product which may be purchased by a player landed adjacent that area. Table 1 is a food check list listing the foods available on the supermarket shelves, areas 2. Areas 2 are colour coded. Each area having a value of 2, 3 or 5 points, indicative of the value of the goods represented by that area.For example, Rolls, area 2a, are worth 2 points, Biscuits 2b are worth 3 points, and Wholewheat medium cut 2c is worth 5 points.

An entrance 4 and a plurality of exits 5 are provided on the board. Areas 6, adjacent exits 5, marked "PAY HERE", designate a supermarket checkout point. Area 7 represents the Manager's office. Certain of the areas 3 are marked calamity card (8) and certain of the areas 3 are marked Final Card (9).
Preferably the final card areas are proximal of the exits 5.
Figure 2 shows a shopping card 12 divided into columns 13,14,15 headed 2,3 and 5 respectively.
Figure 3 shows a back of a card designated calamity card 10. A set of such cards is provided, each having thereupon an instruction, being an advantage or disadvantage to a player collecting such a card 10. A list of such instructions is given in Table 2. Instructions 1 to 12 are disadvantages and have a word or words highlighted by underlining.
TABLE 2 Calamity card instructions 1. Your tomato sauce slips through the side of your trolley and smashes. Miss a turn.
2. You cannot afford to buy the item beside you. Do not enter it on your shopping card.
3. You accidentally knock a dlspiay of tins over. Miss two turns.
4. The milk carton in your trolley has leaked all over your goods. Go to MANAGER'S OFFICE to complain.
5. FIRE-ALARM GOES OFF. All players must leave the store and throw a six to re-enter. Players may re-enter through the exits.
6. The shop is so crowded that you jfaint. Got to ENTRANCE to get some fresh air.
7. Your trolley squeaks. Go to ENTRANCE to change it.
8. You've lost a child. Go to MANAGER's OFFICE.
9. The shelves are being refilled and you can't get past. Miss two turns.
10. Your trolley collapses. Go to ENTRANCE to get another one.
11. Your bag of sugar bursts. Go back three spaces.
12. YouiR on some spilt milk and fall over. Go to MANAGER'S OFFICE.
13. You are the shop's 1,000 customer. (This card can be used to get out of the Manager's Office) 10 point bonus.
14. Wine tasting offer. Free sample. 5 point bonus.
15. Free gift. Tights. 5 point bonus.
16. Cheese tasting offer. Free sample. 5 point bonus.
17. Free gift. Shampoo. 5 point bonus.
18. As-you-were card. (This card enables you to go back to where you were before the Fire-Alarm).
19. Free gift. Washing up liquid. 5 point bonus.
20. Express Exit. (This card enables you to get out of the shop when six or less squares remain).
Figure 4 shows a back of a chance card designated a final calamity card 11. A set of such cards 11 is provided each having thereupon instructions being an advantage or disadvantage to a player collecting such a card 11. A list of such instructions is given in Table 2. A word in each of the instructions is highlighted by underlining.

2. One item in your trolley is not priced. Go straight back six squares.
3. This exit is closing. for a tea break. Go out by another exit.
4. The asistant finds that one of your eggs is cracked. Go to EGGS to get another box.
5. You've left your purse at home. Miss a turn while you write a cheque.
6. You are going through the Express Exit with more than eight items. Got out by another exit.
7. You are questioned by the store detective who thinks you are trying to leave without paying. Miss a turn.
8. You've forgotten to buy any bread. Go back to the bread of your choice.
A set of tokens to represent the positions of players on the board, and a dice are also provided.
Players take it in turns to throw the dice. A player must throw a six to move onto the board. The player then moves with his next throw of the dice, counting from the entrance 4, and moving a number of squares equal to the number on the dice. Players may move only forward or sideways, unless instructed otherwise by a card.
A player may purchase only an item of goods adjacent the square on which he comes to rest, and may purchase only one item. The player writes the name of the item purchased in the appropriate column on his shopping card, each item may be purchased only once per game by each player. For example, crisps 16, have a value of 2 points and so a purchase of these items will be written in the column 13 headed -2- on the shopping card 12, Figure 2. A player takes an extra turn each time he throws a six, and so is able to purchase extra items.
When a player lands on a square 8,9 marked calamity cardS, or final card 9, he purchases an item adjacent the square, if able to, and then takes a card from the top of a pile of calamity cards 10 or final calamity cards 11 and hands it to a second player, on his right. The second player reads the instruction on the card aloud. A disadvantage given by the card may be avoided if the player can spell correctly the word highlighted on the card. If a player is sent to the Manager's Office he may get out by throwing a four, or using an appropriate calamity card 10.
A player must throw the exact number or use an appropriate calamity card 10 to leave the store. The player leaving the store is given a bonus often points, and the game ends. The winner is the player having the highest total of points at the end of the game.

Claims (13)

1. Board game apparatus comprising a board divided into a plurality of areas of first and second types to represent a shop or supermarket, the first type representing shelves or the like containing goods available for purchase and the second type defining passageways past the shelves.
2. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein the areas of the second type define at least one shop entrance zone and one shop exit zone.
3. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1 or 2, including a set of tokens, each for representing the progress of a player around the board, and a chance device for determining the degree of movement of a token.
4. Apparatus as claimed in claim 3, wherein the chance device comprises a dice.
5. Apparatus as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 4, including a set of cards to be drawn from by a player as determined by chance, each card effecting an advantage or disadvantage for the player.
6. Apparatus as claimed in claim 5, wherein a first set of said cards effects advantages or disadvantages of a type encountered when collecting goods for purchase.
7. Apparatus as claimed in claim 6, wherein said areas of a second type include areas instructing a player landed thereupon to draw a card from said first set of cards.
8. Apparatus as claimed in claim 5, 6 or 7, wherein a second set of said cards effects advantages or disadvantages of a type which may be encountered when leaving a shop or supermarket.
9. Apparatus as claimed in claim 8, wherein said areas of a second type include areas instructing a player landed thereupon to draw a card from said second set of cards.
10. Apparatus as claimed in any one of claims 5 to 9, wherein a said card has written instructions thereupon having a word thereof highlighted.
11. Apparatus as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 10, wherein said areas of a second type are formed in adjacent parallel rows to allow a player to move sideways between facing areas of a first type.
12. Apparatus as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 11, wherein said areas of a first type each have a value selected from a predetermined range of values.
13. Game board apparatus substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
