Abstract

Apparatus for treating a flow of material by an electric arc and for generating free radicals and/or atoms, and charged species, in ground or excited states. A cathode (13) comprising a cylindrical rod having a plane end with an edge (39) for striking the arc and an anode (14) having two frusto-conical surfaces (35, 37) are arranged for obtaining an arc across a preferably annular gap and provide a pathway for flow of material through this gap. Means preferably magnetic means (19), cause the anode spot and cathode root to travel around respective circular paths in parallel planes, in the same sense and in substantially the same time, in such a manner that the length of the arc remains substantially constant during the motion of said anode spot and cathode root. <IMAGE>
