Abstract

A clip has a U-shaped cross- sectional contour, one wing (10) thereof having at its outer end an extension or bead (9), the base (12) of the U being formed at right angles thereto with an integral gripping lug (13) consisting of an extension of the other wing (14) of the U, which is opposite the free end of this other wing. The clip consists preferably of plastics material of the polyoxymethylene type. In use the clip holds together two elements with limbs (3, 7) bearing flanges (4, 8) by gripping at two locations, firstly by gripping limbs (3, 7) between wing (14) and the end of extension (9), and secondly by holding the flanges (4, 8) between the underside of extension (9) and base (12). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Clip with double clamping action This invention relates in general to clips and has specific reference to an improved clip, advantageously of plastics material, having a double clamping action and capable of firmly assembling two section elements each provided with at least one flange or collar, notably a peripheral protective and/or decoratiive element, generally of plastics material, for an automobile body, and a sheet metal body element.
The object of this invention is to provide a clip for assembling elements of the type mentioned hereinabove and imparting a clean finish thereto by means not visible from the exterior of the vehicle, this clip being on the one hand easy to fit in position for example on a production line, notwithstanding the necessity of fitting the clip blindly, and on the other hand easy to remove for disassembling purposes even by the layman, while avoiding the development of corrosion in the assembled parts, notably in the case of peripheral elements secured to the sheet-metal wings of a car body; besides, the clip and its mode of action are such that it permits the use of an anti-gravel putty or like product in the assembly, and the free expansion of the plastics element in relation to the sheet-metal car body element in the longitudinal direction.
So far as the Applicants are aware, no systems capable of meeting these contradictory requirements has been proposed up to day; in fact, known systems either require the use of complicated or special tools, or the fastening member when fitted in position is liable to rust and to propogate corrosion to the surrounding steel components, or alternatively it prevents the free expansion of the plastics element in relation to the sheet metal part.
The clip according to this invention comprises a U-shaped section of which one wing comprises across its end opposite the base an extension or clamping bead, and, at right angles to the base of the U, the other wing has an extension opposite its free end to constitute a gripping lug.
This clip advantageously consists of a material having the requisite mechanical strength and resiliency, and preferably of plastics material of the polyoxymethylene type.
A clearer understanding of this invention will be had as the following description proceeds with reference to the accompanying drawing illustrating diagrammatically by way of example a typical form of embodiment of the clip of this invention. In the drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a car body section element A; Figure 2 is a perspective view of a protective and/or decorative section element B of plastics material; Figure 3 is a perspective view of a clip C according to this invention; and Figures 4, 5 and 6 illustrate three different steps of the fitting of a clip according to this invention The body section element A has the crosssectional configuration of an inverted channel comprising three sides 1, 2 and 3, with wing 3 provided with an inturned flange or collar 4.The peripheral decorative and/or protective section element B has likewise a channel configuration in cross section with three sides 5, 6 and 7, the wing 7 comprising an integral out-turned external flange or collar 8.
The clip C is substantially U-shaped in crosssection with a base 1 2 and two wings or sides 10 and 14. Wing 10 comprises across its outer end an extension forming a clamp or bead 9. The other wing 14 has an extension opposite its free end which constitutes a gripping lug 1 3 to facilitate the fitting of clip C, even blindly.
The clip C is firstly presented in a position diverging clockwise by about 90 degrees from its final position (see Fig. 4) so as to engage with the bead 9 the inner face of flange 4 of element A, assuming that the two elements A and B have previously been brought to the relative positions shown in Figure 4, so that flanges 4 and 8 are superposed to each other. Then a force F is exerted on lug 1 3 (see Fig. 5) so as to rotate counter-clockwise the clip C which is thus eventually brought to its final clamping position illustrated in Figure 6. In this position, the clip C has a two-fold clamping function: on the one hand, it exerts a resileint pressure between its bead 9 and the clip base 12 against the flanges 4 and 8, and on the other hand, another pressure is exerted between the bead 9 and wing 14 against the wings 3 and 7 of elements A and B, respectively. This holding force may be adjusted by properly calculating the cross-sectional and longitudinal dimensions of the various component elements of the clip.
In Figure 6 it is clearly apparent that the presence of anti-gravel putty or like product on the inner surface of wing 3 will only improve the clamping action of clip C, without departing from its basic principle.
It is also obvious that the invention should not be construed as being strictly iimited by the specific form of embodiment described hereinabve with reference to the accompanying drawing, since it includes all modifications and changes likely to occur to those conversant with the art, within the scope of the invention clearly set forth in the following claims.
1. A clip, advantageously of plastics material, having a double clamping action and capable of assembling two section elements each provided with at least one flange or collar, notably a peripheral protective and/or decorative element, generally of plastics material, of an automobile body, and a sheet-metal automobile body element, characterized in that it comprises a Ushaped cross-sectional configuration of which one wing has formed at its outer end an extension or bead, and across the base of the U-section,
