Abstract

A clip, advantageously of plastics material, intended for assembling two section elements, notably a peripheral protective and/or decorative element B, generally of plastics material, of a body, and a sheet metal element A. The clip comprises a U-shaped body C having one wing provided with an oblique extension directed towards the theoretical extension of the other wing of the U, and is applicable notably to the automobile industry. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Clip This invention relates in general to clips and has specific reference to an improved assembling clip, advantageously of plastics material, intended for firmly assembling two section elements, notably a peripheral protective and/or decorative element, generally of plastics material, of a car body, with a sheetmetal body element.
It is the primary object of this invention to provide a clip capable of assembling elements of the type mentioned in such a way as to impart a clean finish when seen from the exterior, the fastening means remaining invisible, while permitting an easy assembling during the manufacturing process and a likewise easy disassembling by the user when necessary, and safely preventing, in the assembled elements, any corrosion more particularly of the peripheral elements secured to sheet-metal elements of the body; finally, the clip of this invention permits the free expansion of the plastics element in relation to the body element in the longitudinal direction.
So far as the Applicants are aware, no system capable of meeting these contradictory requirements has been proposed up to now; in fact, known systems of this character either require the use of special or complicated tools, or the fastening element when fitted in position tends to rust and eventually propagates its corrosion to the surrrounding steel elements, or prevents the free expansion of the plastics element in relation to the sheetmetal element.
The plastics clip according to this invention consists of a substantially U-shaped element, when seen in cross-section, with one wing provided with an extension directed obliquely towards the theoretical extension of the other wing of the U.
This clip is advantageously made from a material having adequate mechanical properties and a good resiliency, preferably of the polyoxymethylene plastics type.
The objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent from the following description of a preferred form of embodiment given by way of example, not of limitation, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a section element A of a car body; Figure 2 is a perspective view of a plastics protective and/or decorative section element B; Figure 3 is a perspective view of a clip C according to the instant invention; and Figures 4, 5 and 6 illustrate diagrammatically in cross section three different steps of the procedure for fitting the clip of this invention in position.
The body element A comprises two wings 1 and 2, the wings 2 terminating with a flange or collar 3. The protective and/or decorative element B according to this example is channel-shaped, i.e. comprises an exterior wing 4, a bottom 5 and an inner wing 6, the bottom 5 having formed therethrough an aperture or notch 7 extending from the inner face of wing 6 to a short distance inwardly of the bottom 5.
The U-shaped plastics clip C comprises two wings 8 and 10 extending in substantially parallel relationship and substantially at right angles from the base 9, one wing 10 having an extension 11 directed obliquely towards a theoretical extension of the other wing 8, as shown in the drawing.
When fitting the clip C, in a first step the elements 3 and 6 being disposed in their final relative positions as shown in Fig. 4, the clip C is presented after rotating same through an angle of about 90 degrees from its final position in the clockwise direction, as seen in this Figure, and the extension 11 of arm 10 is inserted into the notch 7, whereafter the clip C is pivoted in the counter-clockwise direction, still as seen in Fig. 4, by exerting a force F (Fig. 5) against the opposite wing 8. In the final assembling position, the extension 11 of arm 10 bears on the wing 2 of element A, and the wings 10 and 11 of clip C encompass the flange 3 of this sheet-metal element A as well as the wing 6 of plastics element B.
The holding force of clip C may be adjusted by properly calculating the cross-sectional and longitudinal dimensions of the clip. Moreover, the clip is so designed that it can easily be fitted in position even blindly. When in its final position, the clip is flush with the outer surface of the plastics element so that, in a relatively low assembling structure, the fastening system is definitely invisible.
Of course, this invention should not be construed as being strictly limited by the specific form of embodiment described hereinabove with reference to the accompanying drawing, since it includes all modifications and changes within the skill of those conversant with the art, provided that the same basic principles, set forth in the following claims, are adhered to.

This clip is advantageously made from a material having adequate mechanical properties and a good resiliency, preferably of the polyoxymethylene plastics type.
