Abstract

A spring clip intended for assembling two section elements comprising the one a flange A and the other a bearing channel B for said flange, the other element being for example a peripheral protective and/or decorative element, generally of plastics material, the flanged element being a sheet-metal body element. The clip C proper comprises on the one hand a curved resilient strip providing a bearing and retaining portion of the clip engageable on the free wing of the channel of the protective and/or decorative element, and on the other hand a locking portion adapted to urge the peripheral protection element against the body element; this clip is intended especially for use in the automobile industry. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Spring clip This invention relates in general to spring clips and has specific reference to an improved device of this type, capable of firmly assembling two section members comprising the one a flange or collar on one wing and the other a bearinga channel adapted to receive said flange, for example a peripheral protective and/or decorative element, generally of plastics material, and a sheet-metal body element, notably for the automobile industry.
With the spring clip of this invention a clean external finish can be obtained by using fixing means not visible from the exterior and easily fitted during the manufacturing process, notwithstanding a compulsorily "blind" assembling and disassembling operation (for the user), while permitting the use of an antigravel filler or putty during the assembling operation, and allowing a free expansion of the plastics element in relation to the body element in the longitudinal direction.
So far as the Applicants are aware, no system capable of meeting these contradictory requirements has been proposed up to now; in fact, known systems of this character either require the use of complicated or special tools, or prevent the free expansion of the plastics element in relation to the sheet-metal element.
The spring clip according to this invention comprises on the one hand a resilient strip so bent as to provide a bearing portion capable of retaining the clip in the channel formed on one of the elements, for example a peripheral protective and/or decorative element, and on the other hand a locking portion capable of urging the peripheral protection element against the body element by causing said flange to snappily clear the locking portion of the clip and be eventually retained by the lower edge of this locking portion. This resilient strip advantageously consists of a curved steel spring blade.
The objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent from the following description of a preferred embodiment given by way of illustration, not of limitation, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which: Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a sheet-metal body element; Figure 2 is a perspective view of the spring clip according to this invention Figure 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of a peripheral decorative and/or protective element adapted to be assembled with the body element of Fig. 1 by means of the spring clip of Fig. 2; Figure 4 is a diagrammatic cross section showing the first step of the assembling of the elements shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3;; Figure 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4 showing the second step of the assembling of the elements of Figs. 1, 2 and 3, and Figure 6 is a similar view showing the elements of Figs. 1, 2 and 3 in their assembled condition.
Referring to the drawing and more particularly to Figs. 1, 2 and 3 thereof, the body element A has substantially the cross-sectional shape of an inverted U with unequal side arms, the smaller arm 5 having formed at its free end an inturned collar, ledge or flange 6.
If desired, the inner surface of this element A may be coated with a layer of anti-gravel product or putty, according to a practice well known in the art.
The peripheral protective and/or decorative element B, advantageously of plastics material, has a substantially S-shaped cross-sectional configuration comprising an internal depending channel having an inner wing 7 connected to the visible section element proper B, a flat bottom 8 and an internal wing 9 having a free upper edge.
The spring clip C consisting of a bent spring blade comprises a curved bearing portion or strip 1 and a retaining and locking portion consisting in fact of a central blade 2 formed with retaining teeth 2a and of a pair of lateral tongues 3.
When assembling the elements A, B and C, in a first step the wing 9 of section B is introduced into the retaining and bearing portion (2, 3) of spring clip C so that the teeth 3a of the central blade 2 penetrates somewhat into the inner surface of wing 9 of plastics element B, and at the same time the lateral tongues 3 bear resiliently against the outer surface of wing 9. Then, the element A is pressed into the channel 7, 8, 9 of element B while causing the wing 5 of element A to slide along, and in contact with, the wing 7 of plastics element B. During this movement, the inner flange 6 depresses the resilient strip 1 until the flange 6 snappily clears the lower edge of said strip 1 and bears against the bottom 8 of channel 7, 8, 9.
Thus, the resilient strip 1 is allowed to expand and urges the wing 5 of element A against the wing 7 of element B with a pressure P resulting from its inherent elasticity. With this arrangement, it is possible in a production line to fit more positive fastening means at another station even relatively remote from the one in which the above-described steps are carried out.
The assembly shown in Fig. 6 can be disassembled by tearing away the protection element B. Thus, the spring clip C is either destroyed or torn away from the plastics element B, and in both cases no damage is caused to the protection element proper.
It will readily occur to those conversant with the art that the invention should not be construed as being strictly limited by the specific form of embodiment shown and described herein, since many modifications and changes may be brought thereto, notably in connection with the relaive dimensions, shapes and materials of the component elements assembled by means of the spring clip, and also to the shape and relative proportions of the spring clip proper, without departing from the basic principies of the invention as set forth in the

1. A spring clip for firmly assembling two section elements comprising the one a flange and the other a bearing channel for said flange, for example a peripheral protective and/or decorative element generally of plastics material, especially for an automobile body, and a sheet-metal automobile body element, characterized in that a resilient strip is so curved as to provide a bearing and retaining portion comprising a central blade and a pair of lateral tongues disposed on either side of said central blade, said central blade and said tongues providing therebetween a gap adapted to receive and resiliently clamp a free wing of a channel portion of said plastics element, said central blade comprising integral teeth adapted to penetrate and retain said wing in said gap, and a locking portion is adapted to urge resiliently said peripheral protective and/or decorative element against said body element when said flange is snappily engaged under the lower edge of said locking portion consisting of a blade, firstly depressed by said flange of the body element and eventually adapted positively to retain said flange and resiliently press said body element against said protective and/or decorative element.
2. Spring clip as set forth in claim 1, characterized in that said resilient strip is a curved steel spring.
3. A Spring clip substantially as described herein with reference to Figs. 2, 4, 5, and 6 of the accompanying drawings.
