Abstract

203,143. Edgerton, A. July 29, 1922. Ferrule and bush cxtractors. -- A tool of the kind employed for extracting ferrules, valve seatings and other members from the parts to which they are secured, and comprising a screwed rod slidably mounted in a standard bridging the ferrule &c. and carrying pivoted hook-like members adapted to engage the ferrule, the extraction being effected by moving the rod longitudinally by means of nut screwed upon it and bearing against the standard, is modified to adapt it for the extraction of the overhead valves and valve casings of internal combustion engines, and for this purpose the hook-like members 11 are so constructed that upon lowering the screw 8 they will automatically spread apart and then swing inwardly to engage the collar 17 on the valve spindle 18. The hooks 11 are pivoted to a boss 9 on the screw 8, the pivots being formed in known manner as lateral projections 11<a> engaging open bearings 10. The screw 8 slides through standard 12 bridging the valve casing 20 and its raised by a nut 15, the upward pull being transferred to the lower end of the casing 20 by means of the valve spindle 18 and valve 19. If the valve spindle is fractured the casing 20 may be removed by screwing or otherwise securing to the lower end of the screw 8, a split rod 21, Fig. 7, having a shoulder 21b near its lower end adapted, when the rod is inserted through the valve spindle opening in the casing 20, to engage beneath the lower end of the usual boss 20a on the casing.
