Abstract
163,028. Weaver, P., and Craig, H. C. May 5, 1920, [Convention date]. Wells; bore-hole apparatus.-Oil and like wells having an inner casing and an outer casing are provided with a device. secured to the outer casing and comprising members surrounding the inner casing and adapted to be adjusted so as rigidly to hold or to release the inner casing. In the fonn shown, the upper section of the outer casing 1 at its upper end carries a valve 3 through which the inner casing 2 can pass and at its lower end is threaded to a cover 7 threaded to a body 6 carried by the upper end of the next section of the casing 1. Within the body 6, and guided by parallel frustro-conical surfaces 10, 11, 12, are segments 9 which may be forced forward by screws 15 to hold the inner casing 2; the segments 9, which have convex ends, then substantially close the annular space between the casings. On release of the screws 15, the segments may be raised, by means of a ring 8 and lifting-rods 20, to permit passage of a coupling 1<1>; pivoted catches 25 are provided to hold the segments in raised position.. In use, when oil &c. is struck and it is desired to cut off the flow, the inner casing is gripped by the segments 9 below the coupling 1<1>, the upper section of the inner casing is removed and the valve 3 is closed.
