Packing, non-metallic.-A well casing is provided with a member C between the valve V and the usual closure H, the member C forming a seating for an inflatable rubber &c. ring D; when lowering or raising the drill pipe M, and on contact of a joint with the closure H, the ring D is inflated to close the space around the drill pipe, whereupon the closure H may be removed to permit passage of the joint.
