Abstract
A method of locating an instrument such as a radiation source for radiography, in a pipe 3 involves creating a first magnetic field by means of a magnet 63 acting on a soft iron disc 54 attached to the instrument to draw the instrument along the pipe to a predetermined position in which the disc 54 is located in the centre of the magnetic field. A second magnetic field produced by a magnet 64 can act upon slug 41 for exposing the source. The source (2) can be used for determining the accuracy of location of the instrument with respect to the weld 4 by the use of reduced shielding (17) about the radiation source when the instrument is in an inactive state, radiation then being received by detectors 67. <IMAGE>
