Abstract

In order to detect the interface, a californium-252 neutron source (2) is employed, the scattered neutrons being observed by means of a helium-3 detector (1). Said detector is connected to a preamplifier (3) of a high-voltage source (4) for the bias, an analysing amplifier (5) and a digital counter (6). The detector system is arranged in a shield (7) which consists of a graphite reflector (8), a paraffin moderator (9) and a cadmium layer (10). In order to detect an interface of materials having different hydrogen content in a steel vessel, there is arranged on the outside thereof a neutron source and a detector, which are at a mutual distance of at most 50 cm. Such an arrangement of detector and source is permissible, because the detector is considerably more sensitive to the neutrons scattered by hydrogen nuclei than to neutrons radiated by the source. <IMAGE>
